🏳️‍🌈Happy Pride Month! 🏳️‍🌈

Rainbow Mob have always been, and will always be, a celebrated part of Aboriginal communities. This Pride Month, we want to shout out loud that you are seen, you are valued, and you belong.

Pride Month is a time to celebrate LGBTQIA+ people and their history, recognise diversity in sexuality and identity, and amplify their voices.

When we embrace and celebrate Rainbow Mob diversity, we strengthen our whole community and we make sure everyone gets access to the great health care they deserve.

Rainbow Mob deserve to feel safe, supported and celebrated, not just this month, but always.

Today we mark Mabo Day, recognising the legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo, a proud Torres Strait Islander man from Mer Island, and the 1992 decision that rejected terra nullius and acknowledged the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country.

As an Aboriginal-led research centre, we reflect on the strength and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the importance of continuing this work, especially in closing the gap in health outcomes.

At the UQ Poche Centre, we are proud to support and grow Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research leadership, because lasting change happens when research is led by and for community.

We were delighted to host Moana Rarere today for her seminar “From Colonial Counts to Indigenous Peoples – Re‑imagining Māori Demography.”

Thank you, Moana, for sharing fresh perspectives on centring iwi and hapū in demographic research and challenging colonial census frameworks. It was an excellent session, and we’re grateful you visited Poche and shared your insights.

TODAY IS IDAHOBIT 🌈

On May 17, we recognise the strength, pride, and visibility of LGBTIQA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities. This day marks the anniversary of 1990, when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases, a powerful milestone in our shared history.

While we’ve made progress, stigma, discrimination, and exclusion still impact our lives every day, from healthcare to housing, work to connection.

This IDAHOBIT, let’s stand together to challenge discrimination and continue building a Queensland where everyone belongs, feels safe to be visible, and where our diversity is recognised, respected, and celebrated. 💜
