University is about more than the degree you leave with.

It’s about the conversations that challenge you.
The people who broaden your perspective.
And the courage to sit in uncomfortable truths, keep learning and keep showing up.

For Victoria and Ma’Ayan, reconciliation in action looks like learning together, listening deeply and creating change through connection.

Because when you choose a university, you’re choosing the kind of community you want to be part of.

This is what reconciliation looks like in action. 💜

31/05/2026

This National Reconciliation Week, Ma’Ayan and Taha unpack what reconciliation really means from acknowledging Australia’s shared history to recognising the power of listening, learning and showing up together.

Because reconciliation belongs to all of us.

This year’s theme reminds us we’re all in for reconciliation and that meaningful change happens when we move forward together.

We’re all in. Are you?

28/05/2026

Reconciliation lives in the conversations we have, the stories we share, and the way we show up for each other every day. 💜

For Aaliyah and Victoria, learning at UQ goes beyond the classroom. It’s about listening, asking questions, challenging perspectives and building genuine connection through shared experiences.

This National Reconciliation Week, we’re celebrating the small moments that create meaningful change.

Are you in?

The University of Queensland has committed to doubling the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical students by 2030.

The Indigenous Student Enrolment Strategy for its Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree has set an ambitious goal to enrol 100 Indigenous students across the 4-year program by 2030, supporting long‑term growth in the Indigenous medical workforce across Australia.

Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences Associate Dean (Indigenous Engagement), Professor Thelma Parker, said the strategy, which aligns with UQ’s Queensland Commitment, reflected UQ’s responsibility to foster culturally safe pathways and would help boost the numbers of First Nations doctors.

“There are not enough First Nations doctors in the community, and we’ve created a bold target deliberately because incremental change is not sufficient,’’ Professor Parker said.

Reconciliation in higher education isn’t a moment. It’s an ongoing responsibility.

About creating spaces where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples feel seen, heard and supported to succeed.

And students have a powerful role to play. Through their voices, actions and leadership, they help shape a future grounded in respect, truth-telling and real opportunity.

Because the future of reconciliation will be shaped by the students who choose to lead differently.

Two young hackers from The University of Queensland took on the world’s best when the ‘world cup’ of cybersecurity landed on the Gold Coast 💻🌏

Bachelor of Computer Science and Mathematics students Jayden Young and Rohan van Klinken represented Team Oceania as they competed for the International Cybersecurity Challenge (ICC) title, hosted by UQ Cyber and AUSCERT.

“It’s interesting to think that people with the ability to hack into things were once treated as criminals, but competitions like this show that has completely changed,” Rohan said.

“Understanding how systems work and how they can be broken and fixed is a skill like any other, and companies want people who can tell them how they can be hacked.

“Things like system exploitation and cryptography have gone from clandestine activities to prized skills in a modern digital economy.”

The team went head-to-head with elite competitors from across the globe in intense 8-hour sessions tackling real-world cyber threats through capture-the-flag and attack-and-defence challenges. 🔐⚡

A University of Queensland initiated degree is helping alleviate the strain on Australia’s busy veterinary clinics, but academics say industry reform is needed to solve the workforce crisis.

Graduates of UQ’s Bachelor of Veterinary Technology program work as key members of veterinary teams with a professional skillset between vet nurses and veterinarians.

Associate Professor Rebekah Scotney from the School of Veterinary Science said recognition for vet technologists would help reduce the workload of veterinarians and provide more time to help seriously ill and injured animals.

On 25 April, we pause to remember and reflect.

From Gallipoli in 1915 through to today, Anzac Day is a time to honour all Australians who have served in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

At The University of Queensland and the Queensland Agricultural College (now UQ Gatton), students and staff were among those who answered the call, with nearly 300 people enlisting for active overseas and home duty.

Their service is remembered across our campuses. At St Lucia, a memorial plaque sits in the foyer of the Forgan Smith Building, and at Gatton, another is located at the War Memorial Swimming Pool. These plaques stand as lasting reminders of those who served and those who did not return.

They were made possible through the efforts of the University War Memorial Committee and the Gatton Old Boys and Past Students Association, ensuring their legacy continues to be honoured.

Lest we forget.

Why are we all so obsessed with protein?

Walk down any supermarket aisle and it’s hard to miss protein pasta, protein yoghurt, protein brownies even protein water.

What was once the domain of gym enthusiasts has now become a full-blown mainstream fixation. But do we really need all this extra protein, or are we falling for clever marketing?

According to Professor Lauren Ball from UQ’s Centre for Community Health and Wellbeing, the surge in protein‑labelled products reflects both consumer anxiety and commercial opportunity.

“Protein has become the ‘nutrient of the moment’,” Professor Ball said.

“People are genuinely interested in health, but they’re also very susceptible to messages that promise quick or easy benefits.”

UQ researchers have received national recognition for helping Australians catch melanoma earlier – saving lives and making diagnosis more accessible in metro and regional areas.

The Australian Centre of Excellence in Melanoma Imaging and Diagnosis – a collaboration between The University of Queensland, Monash University, The University of Sydney, and 15 hospitals and health services – received a Shaping Australia Award for their work to advance melanoma screening.

Led by Professor H. Peter Soyer, ACEMID is using advanced imaging and AI to set new global benchmarks in melanoma diagnosis and improve patient outcomes.

Professor Ben Hankamer was also recognised as a finalist in the same category for pioneering the use of sunlight‑driven microalgae chemistry to create sustainable products.

Presented by Universities Australia, the Shaping Australia Awards celebrate the positive impact of universities, with the Problem Solver category recognising collaborative research between universities, government and industry that is delivering breakthroughs for Australians.

TIME Magazine ranks UQ as Australia’s top university

The University of Queensland has been named Australia’s best university and 30th globally in TIME Magazine’s inaugural edition of the World’s Top Universities of 2026.

UQ performed strongly in the Innovation and Economic Impact indicator which highlights the contributions of its graduates to global economic decision-making and society, and advancements in science and technology.

This also reflects the impact of UQ’s commercialisation company UniQuest which has created more than 136 startups from UQ intellectual property and more than 250 jobs, and generated $88+ billion in gross product sales from licensed UQ technologies.

Most notably, Sanofi’s acquisition of UQ vaccine startup Vicebio in a landmark deal in July 2025 for US$1.15 billion was the largest deal involving IP from an Australian university.

UQ also performed well in Academic Capacity and Performance as Australia’s most highly cited university, and Global Engagement recognising its extensive global network.

Together, the results reinforce UQ’s long‑standing commitment to high-quality teaching and student learning experiences, driving economic growth through lab‑to‑startup innovation, and meaningful graduate outcomes.
