Classics and Ancient History Society: The University of Queensland 🏺UQ’s Classics and Ancient History Society 🌳 Check our linktree for our events and website!

Founded in 1949, the Classics and Ancient History Society (CAHS) is one of the oldest student societies at UQ, and the oldest classical studies students' society in Australia. With a long history of entertaining and educating UQ students enrolled, or just interested in, Classical Languages and Ancient History, CAHS is you go to club at UQ for all things ancient history! Joining CAHS is an easy way to meet other students whose interest and better judgement has compelled them to pursue the study of dead people and really dead languages. It’s a society that allows the patricians to fraternize with the plebs at a variety of social events as well as offering academic support programs to assist in cultivating your Ciceronian wits. We're a welcoming bunch, and really hope you're interested.

If you’ve been dreaming of joining our team, or just want to come along to cast your vote (and enjoy some free drinks 😉), then make sure to join us on October 20th in the Michie building.

The meeting starts at 5pm, and will run no later than 7, but we’ll keep the party going in the Red Room afterwards🍾🥂

Officially Announcing the ✨2026 Humanities Honours Seminar✨, hosted by 🏛️UQ Classics and Ancient History Society🏛️, 📜UQ History Society 📜, 🏺UQ Archaeological Society🏺, 📖UQ Advanced Humanities Society 📖, and 🦉UQ Student Philosophy Association🦉.

Food will be provided in the Great Court from 5pm then join us at 6pm on the 10th of September to hear from ten students who have been completing their honours theses over the past year.

Classics & Coffee is a weekly event that we host on alternating days (unless otherwise noted) where we discuss a topic in ancient history that is of interest to our members and execs and might not necessarily be discussed in class. There is no need to have prior knowledge of the topic, in fact we encourage you to come along and learn something new !! The chats are very casual and, depending on funding, might involve a free coffee. So please come along and say ‘hi👋’ to your fellow classics and ancient history enthusiasts !!

There is only a week left to submit your applications for the Honours Seminar !!

After having to postpone it last semester, we are bringing back the humanities honours seminar hosted by UQ CAHS, UQ History Society, UQ Archaeological Society, UQ Advanced Humanities Society (New!) and UQ Student Philosophy Association (New!).

This is an opportunity for Honours students to gain speaking experience by sharing their honours topics or process in a short (5-10minute) presentation.

We’re looking for speakers who are currently completing their honours year is one of the following fields:
- Ancient History
- Classical Languages
- History
- Archaeology
- Philosophy
- Religious Studies
- Western Civilisation

We will do our best to allow everyone who wants to, an opportunity to speak, however, there are limited places and applications will be accepted on a first come first serve basis.

The newest topic for classics and coffee is LECANOMANCY! Also known as ‘dish divining’.

Come along to discuss the ancient art of vessel divination, and get the chance to take a look at a Roman replication lamp used in this practice!

We’ll be meeting in Michie 536 from 5pm for a 5:30 start. Tomorrow: Thursday the 20th of August
