Griffith University Pride

Griffith University Pride At Griffith everyone belongs. Griffith Pride provides support and resources to Griffith University's LGBTIQ+ staff and allies.

The Griffith ALLY network provides support to the LGBTIQ+ student and staff community at Griffith University. Our aim is to promote an LGBTIQ friendly culture. We encourage sharing of resources, events and useful information, both on and off campus. The primary rule is that this remains a safe, supportive and inclusive space.

πŸ’œ Happy Wear It Purple Day! πŸ’œ

πŸ’œβœ¨ BOLD VOICES, BRIGHT FUTURESβœ¨πŸ’œ

This year’s theme Bold Voices, Bright Futures is brought to life through the incredible artwork of Lee Evatt (he/they), a transgender and q***r artist based on Ngunnawal Country.

Lee’s design is inspired by performers and activists across generations, representing the power of community and the bright futures we’re building together. 🌈

Today, we wear purple to stand with LGBTQIA+ young people, to show them they are seen, supported, and celebrated for exactly who they are. πŸ’«

πŸŒˆπŸŽ† Why visible support matters πŸŽ†πŸŒˆ

Today is Wear it Purple Day! A day to celebrate and show support for LGBTQIA+ young people.

Wearing purple might feel like a small act, but to someone struggling with acceptance or belonging, it can mean everything β˜‚οΈ

πŸ’œ It’s a signal of safety – A purple shirt, badge, or ribbon tells young people, β€œYou’re supported here.”
πŸ’œ It creates visibility – When many people stand together, it’s a reminder that no one is alone.
πŸ’œ It sparks conversations – Symbols of support open the door to education and empathy.

By choosing to wear purple today you’re not just putting on a colour, you’re helping create a campus and community where everyone feels seen, safe, and celebrated.

πŸ’œ Visibility saves lives. Inclusion changes them. πŸ’œ

🌈 Representation matters! Especially in classrooms, lecture theatres, and across our campuses where young people are discovering who they are and how they belong.

Pride Committee member, Amanda, shares what it means to be visible, authentic, and proudly q***r at Griffith 🀩 Her message is a reminder that seeing yourself reflected in your learning space can make all the difference.

πŸ’œ This Friday, and every day, let's celebrate the importance of showing up as our whole selves πŸ₯³ so every student feels safe, supported, and seen as their whole self.

❌ One of the most persistent myths about LGBTQIA+ youth is that they’re β€œjust going through a phase.” Identity is not a trend and young people deserve to be seen, respected and embraced exactly as they are 🌈

Pride Committee member, Rosalind, shares a powerful message of support and a call for all Griffith students to feel safe, welcome and included 🫢

πŸ’œ This Wear It Purple Day, Friday 29 August, let’s stand together in creating a community where authenticity is celebrated and no one’s identity is dismissed or diminished.

In a world where many LGBTQIA+ people continue to face discriminatory policies, social exclusion, and structural inequality, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

In moments like these, it can be comforting to pause and remember that we are all from and remain interconnected with nature. Nature doesn’t just accept diversity, it relies on it. From thriving ecosystems to resilient communities, diversity is what makes life strong, balanced, and beautiful.

πŸ’œ Q***r is natural.
🌈 You are part of that diversity.
🫢 You are never alone.

πŸ’¬ Our Pride Committee co-chair Andrew reminds us that the need for visible support hasn’t gone away, it’s grown stronger.

Many in the LGBTQIA+ community still face exclusion, discrimination, and challenges to their safety and wellbeing. Now more than ever, coming together to show up, speak out, and stand side by side matters deeply.

πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ Want to take part in a Pride event and show your support?

RSVP now to walk with Griffith in the upcoming Brisbane Pride March and help us form a united, powerful front of allyship and inclusion. πŸ’œ

In Australia, LGBTQIA+ people face mental health challenges at much higher rates than their peers.

🌈 Gender Diverse young people are 7x more likely to be diagnosed with depression.*
🌈 74% of LGB+ people experienced a mental disorder, compared to 41% of heterosexual people.*

For all our LGBTQIA+ and ally staff, students and partners, here are some important reminders:
❀️ You don’t have to be out to be valid.
πŸ’› Who you share your gender or sexual identity with is your choice.
πŸ’š Your life is YOURS, your journey is YOURS, your timeline is YOURS.
πŸ’™ There is no shame in privacy and safety.
πŸ’œ Wearing purple this Friday will help to show LGBTQIA+ people they are πŸ‘€ seen, πŸ‘ accepted, and 🫢 safe

🌈 LGBTIQA+ people use different words to describe sharing their identity. Some say β€œcoming out,” others prefer β€œinviting in” to highlight choice and trust, and some use β€œdisclosure” as a more neutral term.

Disclosure can be empowering when shared with supportive people πŸ’œ but it can also bring risks like invalidation, conflict, or discrimination 🚩🚩

Many LGBTIQA+ people choose when and where to be open, balancing safety and authenticity, but not everyone has this choice. Everyone’s journey is personal, and all experiences of sharing identity deserve respect, safety and understanding. 🌈
