After an ACL reconstruction it is common that ongoing and persistent knee problems are experienced by athletes and patients, this can be especially true for patients with concomitant cartilage and meniscal pathologies. Unfortunately many of these individuals are struggling many months after surgery.

Excitingly, this Australian based RCT investigated the effects of a physiotherapy lead supervised rehabilitation program and the results found a significant improvement in pain, function and strength.

With the publication of the highly anticipated SUPER-Knee study investigating the ongoing challenges patients suffer after an ACLR, we took the opportunity to talk to key researchers, Adam Culvenor, Andrea Bruder and Thomas West to hear about what they learned from the study.

These three senior researchers have some brilliant take homes for clinicians, researchers and healthcare professionals to help improve outcomes for these patients.

We are pleased to share the publication of the SUPER-Knee project in one of the worlds leading medical journals, Annals of Internal Medicine.

The researchers involved with SUPER-Knee, Adam Culvenor, Andrea Bruder, Thomas West, Dr Christian Barton, Ewa Roos, Edwin Oei, Stephen McPhail, Richard Souza, Jusuk Lee, Brooke Patterson, Michael Girdwood, Jamon Couch, Mark Scholes and Kay Crossley AM established a large-scale, randomised controlled trial to investigate solutions to persistent knee problems after an ACL reconstruction.

This landmark study explored the outcomes of a comprehensive physiotherapist supervised exercise program with structured education, compared to an education and non supervised exercise control group.

Amongst the many findings, importantly within 4 months there was improvement in KOOS4 scores, muscle strength gains and reduced pain, which had a significant impact on these participants daily activity and function.

This comprehensive piece of research is a vital read for clinicians and healthcare professionals caring for those after ACL surgery.

Knee osteoarthritis is a common presentation in many athletes and active individuals, and although running with osteoarthritis is likely to be okay it is important to consider the biomechanical, running schedule and gym based exercises to support optimal outcomes.

With all this in mind, Christian Barton has a wealth of knowledge, clinical experience and many journal publications to be one of the world leaders on knee osteoarthritis and running.
