🎉 A huge congratulations to Kayla, one of our final‑year medical students!
🩺 Kayla has received the Rotary Club of Somerset Inc Scholarship in Rural Health in recognition of her passion for rural health and her outstanding community engagement.
⭐️ We’re grateful to the Rotary Club of Somerset Inc for their ongoing support of our medical students.
We were truly inspired by Kayla Fajrianto, a 5th-year Medical Student at the University of Tasmania's (UTas) Rural Clinical School – North West, who shared her remarkable journey and experiences in medical studies with our members at our recent meeting.
Born and raised in Hobart, Tasmania, with Indonesian heritage, Kayla recounted her transformative remote area placements at:
🏥 Kandy National Hospital, Kandy, Sri Lanka, where she gained invaluable hands-on experience in varied departments;
🏥 King Island District Hospital & Health Centre, King Island, Tasmania;
🏥 General Practice, Cygnet Family Practice, Cygnet, Tasmania.
Her stories illuminated the realities of providing healthcare in diverse settings, from low-resource environments in Sri Lanka to rural Tasmania.
Notably, Kayla and her fellow 4th-year medical students from UTAS embarked on clinical placements in Sri Lanka, working in departments like DEM, Surgery, ICU, Medical, and Operating Theatre, where they encountered conditions rarely seen in Australia, fostering a unique learning experience.
The University's support for rural placements and international electives empowers students like Kayla to pursue impactful experiences.
As an exemplary student leader, Kayla also dedicated herself to multi student councils and sporting groups, notably as a Board Member of Medical Student Society, where she championed leadership, student wellbeing, and advocacy.
We congratulate Kayla on receiving the prestigious Rotary Club of Somerset Scholarship in Rural Health 2026, valued at $1000, a testament to her tireless dedication and passion for rural healthcare. Her achievements not only enrich her educational journey but also bode well for her future as a compassionate healthcare professional.
Thank you, Kayla, for inspiring us with your story, and we wish you continued success in your studies and a bright future as a member of the graduating class of 2026.
