🚀 Big win for Australia’s national research infrastructure, and a step forward in a rapidly growing demand landscape.

Outcomes from the 2025 NCRIS Step Change funding round are in, and it’s a strong result for national supercomputing.
NCI has secured $32.16M to develop a National AI/ML Compute Capability, in partnership with Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre and the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC), strengthening Australia’s sovereign compute and data capabilities for AI and data-intensive research. This investment will also support critical upgrades to core infrastructure across the ecosystem, helping improve resilience, scalability, and service capacity over the next phase of growth.

At the same time, demand for national supercomputing continues to significantly outpace supply, with the allocation scheme heavily oversubscribed and many high-quality projects unable to secure access due to limited capacity. This funding is an important step in addressing that gap, but also highlights the scale of the challenge ahead as Australia works to remain globally competitive in advanced computing and AI.

💡 Overall, this round represents meaningful progress for the NCRIS network and the research communities we support, while reinforcing the importance of sustained, forward-looking investment in Australia’s sovereign digital research infrastructure.

NCI-enabled research into ocean and climate processes earns Dr Adele Morrison a national science honour 🏆

How do tiny ocean processes under Antarctica shape global sea-level rise? ❄️🌊

Dr Adele Morrison (Australian National University), Frederick White Medal recipient, is using HPCD power at NCI to uncover how warm Southern Ocean waters interact with Antarctic ice shelves and drive climate change.

Her high-resolution modelling and observations are revealing what we can’t see at the edge of the ice, only possible with national HPCD.

🚀 Strengthening the bridge between education and advanced computing!
We were delighted to welcome educators and leaders from the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT), including Directors from ICT, College of Technology & Design, and Cyber Security, to NCI.

The visit provided a deep dive into high-performance computing environments, giving participants first-hand exposure to the infrastructure that powers modern research and innovation.

From networking and data centre design to emerging technologies, the discussions focused on how we can better connect teaching and curriculum with real-world, large-scale computing systems.

A big thank you to CIT for the visit and for the engaging conversations, we look forward to continuing to strengthen the link between education, skills development, and Australia’s national research infrastructure.
