Strengthening Australia’s research infrastructure ecosystem 🤝

NCI’s Dr Hanah Rodríguez joined colleagues from across the NCRIS community at the AeRO session “Aligning Enterprise IT with National Research Infrastructure”.

Together with partners across national research infrastructure, the session highlighted how Australia’s national supercomputing capabilities (NCI and Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre), data platforms and digital services work together to support researchers and institutions nationwide.

A great opportunity to build stronger connections between institutional IT and the national capabilities powering Australian research. 🇦🇺

🌏 What happens when temperature isn’t the whole story? How do we understand the growing impact of extreme heat in a changing climate? 

This visualisation from NCI’s VizLab combines the ERA5 climate reanalysis dataset with global population data to explore how exposure to extreme wet-bulb temperatures has changed over time, measured as accumulated person-days.

By bringing together large-scale environmental datasets, high-performance computing and advanced visualisation, NCI helps researchers uncover patterns that reveal how climate hazards are evolving and how they affect populations around the world.

This is one example of the science impact enabled by NCI’s national research infrastructure. With access to NCI-hosted datasets and computational capabilities, researchers can build their own analyses to investigate pressing questions across climate, environment and society that support better understanding of environmental change and inform future decision-making.

Researchers are using advanced climate models to simulate how Australia’s weather and climate extremes may change, helping build a clearer picture of future risks, from extreme heat to flooding and coastal impacts.

Powered by NCI’s HPCD, and expertise, the Australian Climate Service is turning vast climate datasets into actionable insights to support climate adaptation and resilience across the nation.
