In Solidarity with the Youth Protesters of Nepal
We, the Nepali Students of the Australian National University Nepali Association (ANUNA), stand in solidarity with the young people of Nepal, especially Gen Z protesters, who courageously took to the streets on 8 September against corruption, the proposed social media ban, and in pursuit of accountability, justice, and a more democratic future.
We express our heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and extend our deepest sympathy to all who are grieving, while wishing for the swift recovery of the injured. No family should have to endure such pain for the simple act of speaking out.
We strongly condemn the use of state violence and intimidation against peaceful demonstrators, many of them still in their school and college uniforms. The silencing of young voices through brutality and fear undermines the very principles of democracy, human rights, and child rights. Protest is not a crime, it is a fundamental right ! The courage of Nepal’s youth reflects a collective demand for transparency, opportunity, and fairness in the governance of our country, a struggle that belongs not only to their generation but to the future of all Nepalis, at home and abroad.
As students in Australia, we affirm our solidarity with this movement and call on the Government of Nepal to respect democratic freedoms, listen to the aspirations of its young citizens, and end the repression of peaceful protest. We also urge the international community, human rights organisations, and global media to pay close attention to these developments, ensuring that the voices of Nepal’s youth are not silenced and that state authorities are held accountable. We call on fellow Nepalis around the world, and our friends in Australia, to recognize the legitimacy of the call for justice and to join Nepali youth in amplifying their voices. We believe the resilience of Nepal’s youth/citizens will be a turning point for positive change.
