The Philippine drug war killings before the ICC: Lessons on complementarity and treaty withdrawal

How does a democracy reckon with mass violence carried out in plain sight - and what are the implications when domestic institutions struggle to deliver accountability?

The ANU Philippines Institute is pleased to host former ICC Judge, Professor Raul Pangalangan for a timely public lecture examining the Philippine drug war killings before the International Criminal Court. The lecture will explore the implications of the Duterte drug war for international criminal law, democratic accountability, and the rule of law in the Philippines. The discussion will focus on two major issues in international criminal law: the principle of complementarity, where the ICC acts only when national courts fail to deliver justice, and the legal implications of treaty withdrawal following the Philippinesโ€™ exit from the Rome Statute.

SEASONAL CLERKSHIPS WITH ARNOLD BLOCH LEIBLER โ€“ MELBOURNE AND SYDNEY

Hi everyone,

It was fantastic meeting many of you at the ANU Clerkship Information Evening earlier this month.

As Canberra-based students, we appreciate that the Melbourne clerkship process can sometimes feel a little unfamiliar. We therefore wanted to share some information about the Victorian process and the opportunities available through Arnold Bloch Leiblerโ€™s (โ€˜ABLโ€™) seasonal clerkship program.

At ABL, our seasonal clerkship program provides a pathway into our graduate program and provides students with the opportunity to gain meaningful exposure to commercial legal practice. Clerks work closely with partners, lawyers and graduates across a range of significant matters and practice areas.

Our clerkships run across three intakes each year:

Summer 1: Novemberโ€“December
Summer 2: Januaryโ€“February
Winter: Juneโ€“July

We understand that many ANU students may also be interested in opportunities in Sydney following university. While our seasonal clerkship program is Melbourne-based, we are able to offer flexibility for clerks to spend part of their clerkship in our Sydney office where that is of interest. This provides students with the opportunity to gain exposure to both offices and experience the broader ABL practice and department you are allocated to.

Importantly, ABL hires graduates into both our Melbourne and Sydney offices, and our clerkship program serves as a pathway into graduate opportunities across both locations.

When should I apply?

Students who are currently in their penultimate year are eligible to apply for clerkships. This means if you are expected to graduate in 2027, you should apply this year for our 2026/27 clerkship intake.

Applications open on Monday, 6 July 2026 and will close at 11:59 pm on Sunday, 9 August 2026.

For further information about our seasonal clerkship program and application process you can visit our Seasonal Clerkship page (https://www.abl.com.au/careers/seasonal-clerks/), or you can review our firm profile in the ANU 2026 Clerkship Guide. You can also watch our ANU clerkship video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5l-dTPegAA&list=PLnzVuI-NwZdkcP4PyoDuuS5M9ziT26gkU&index=8&t=39s) featuring ABL graduates Chloe Lyons and Felix Archibald discussing their experiences at ABL, the clerkship process and advice for students.

If you have any questions about the Melbourne clerkship process or applying from interstate, please contact Olivia Soligo, Human Resources Business Partner, at [email protected], who will be happy to assist.

We look forward to receiving your applications.

The panel may ask questions as they see fit during and after the presentation to find the depth of knowledge and understanding the competitor has in the chosen field. Competitors are assessed on the essay and the presentation.
