Come along to the AUTONOMOUS* WAMG & ANULSS Mooting Workshop (tomorrow night!)

*The workshop will be open to women and gender-diverse identifying ANU students, open to all levels of mooting experience, including complete beginners.

The workshop will be led by experienced WAMG mooters, Ally, Alex and Bita, who will share their personal competition experiences, success strategies, practical advice, and the tips and tricks they wish they had known when starting out in the primarily male dominated field of oral advocacy (with roughly 70.6% of barristers in Australia being male-identifying! - as per Jobs and Skills Australia 2026)

So come along and gain some confidence ahead of the first practice round for novices and meet your fellow competitors - especially those who may be keen on engaging in external competitions (such as our upcoming intervarsity moot with UC!) 💅🔥💅

The ACT Bar Association Inter-Varsity Moot is an appellate criminal law moot run by the ACT Bar Association in conjunction with the ANULSS and the UCLSS.

8 teams (of 2-4 students) from each university will be selected to compete and the final will take place before the Chief Justice of the ACT in the ACT Supreme Court between the highest ranking ANU and UC team. All preliminary rounds will take place at Blackburn Chambers, Key Chambers, Burley Griffin Chambers, and the Office of the Department of Public Prosecutions.

Applications are now open and will close at 11:59pm on Sunday 30 August.

This moot is a great opportunity to engage in an external mooting competition without the fees and travel usually associated and to build connections with barristers and students in the ACT.

The preliminary rounds will take place on:
- Wednesday 16 September (in the evening in person)
- Saturday 19 September (during the day in person)
- Wednesday 23 September (in the evening in person)
- Saturday 26 September (during the day in person).
Each round will run for no more than 90 mins. Competitors are expected to be available for all rounds.

The grand final will take place on Wednesday 30 September at the Supreme Court. All competitors and volunteers will be invited and it will be followed by a small celebration.

Written submissions will be due on Monday 14 September. The problem question will be released on Tuesday 1 September. Awards for written submissions will be announced at the celebration after the grand final.

This competition sits at an intermediate level. It is designed to be a bridge between internal competitions and interstate or international external moots, while remaining accessible to newcomers. Applicants who have completed Criminal Law and Procedure and an internal moot will therefore be preferred, but all applications will be considered. Applicants from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Law Dissertation Applications (LAWS4300/8301, 12units)

Applications for the supervised research thesis project for Semester 1 2027 are now open!

An Undergraduate Law Dissertation (LAWS4300) may be taken as part of a Bachelor of Laws (Honours), whereas a Postgraduate Law Dissertation (LAWS8301) may be taken as part of your Juris Doctor, Master of Laws, Master of Financial Management and Law or Master of International Law and Diplomacy.

Both courses are worth 12 units and involve completing a research thesis that will take the place of two standard elective courses.

The dissertation is designed to build on previous foundational and elective courses and allow students to develop their legal research skills under the supervision of a member of staff. You may wish to approach a relevant academic staff member to explore an agreement, on their part, to supervise your thesis semester. Based on your application (see the course websites below), the convenor (Professor Jo Ford) will decide on your eligibility to enrol in the course.

Applications close: 11.45pm, Wednesday 30 September 2026

Expected decision (outcome): Friday 30 October 2026
