ANU Centre for the Public Awareness of Science CPAS

ANU Centre for the Public Awareness of Science CPAS Australia's leading centre for research and teaching science communication, based at the Australian National University. TEQSA: PRV12002 I CRICOS: 00120C

CPAS is currently training a new generation of highly qualified scientists to become skilled communicators who can engage people with the science, technology, or medical information that is most relevant to them. Postgraduate students at CPAS are currently researching new ways to excite the imagination of the public about science and to encourage informed decisions about scientific issues that wil

l concern us in the 21st century. The Centre is unique in its orientation to both applied and theoretical studies of the communication of science. Students receive a theoretical grounding in communicating with the public, training in research methods and practical guidance in effective professional science communication. CPAS is also part of a growing network of science communicators. It has links with communication programs in universities across Australia, Europe and the Americas and with science centres in Europe, America and Asia. In March 2000 CPAS became an accredited Centre for the Australian National Commission for UNESCO, tasked with collaborating in Australia and the Pacific to raise science awareness throughout this diverse region. Graduates of CPAS are eagerly sought after, making their mark around the world in all areas of science and science communication. CPAS courses provide public speaking, presentation and media skills, exhibition design and communication research, team work and strategic communication skills to communicate science and technology with all manner of people from kindergarten to adulthood, as well as to culturally disparate and geographically isolated communities. Research conducted in CPAS has also led students to diverse careers in scientific organisations, science awareness bodies and the media. CPAS and its staff have received many awards for teaching, collaboration and outreach. Our Master of Science Communication (Outreach), the "Shell-Questacon-ANU Science Circus", has been the recipient of a number of awards including the 1999 Business/Higher Education Round Table Award, and The 2006 Prime Minister's Special Award for Excellence in Community Business Partnerships. Other examples of note are the Centre's 2005 Vice-Chancellor's Award for Outreach, the 2007 Australia–Sri Lanka Association National Student Award for contributions to Australia-Sri Lanka relations, presented to PhD candidate Sean Perera, and the induction of the Director, Associate Professor Sue Stocklmayer, as a member of the Order of Australia in 2004 for services to science communication.

What shapes science more than we like to admit?
From 🦖 Jurassic Park to 🤖 visions of AI doom, pop culture doesn’t just reflect science - it helps shape it. The stories we tell influence how we imagine scientific and technological futures, what we fear, and even what we choose to research. We often assume a one-way relationship (science → culture). But it’s more of a feedback loop: culture feeds back into science, shaping public debates, policy conversations, and scientific agendas.

CPAS has a new piece out in The Conversation Australia + NZ! Co‑authored by Dr Anna-Sophie Jürgens and Shao-Jie Jhou, the article dives into this fascinating dynamic - and why it matters more than you might think. Check it out! 🤓

Making complex and often abstract ideas like energy transitions tangible, relevant and engaging can be a challenge for science communicators and school teachers. CPAS's Dr Graham Walker has been sharing hands-on approaches to address such challenges with teachers in Canberra, Malaysia and most recently South Africa - read more below.

The activities are available open access at http://hdl.handle.net/1885/289738 and you can read more about the research underpinning them in Hands-on climate engagement: principles for effective hands-on activities and demonstrations https://jcom.sissa.it/article/pubid/JCOM_2303_2024_N03/ (open access)

🎊🎊 Congratulations to Thomas on graduating a Graduate Certificate in Science Communication!

Thomas is based in Fiji. He is a trained journalist and teacher, educating high schoolers and university students – who he calls "the future journalists and reporters" – in media and communications. He is hoping what he learns will help equip the scientists, educators, and politicians of the future to face major climate change issues in the pacific.

Thomas was the first Mike Gore scholar. Established to honour the legacy of CPAS stalwart and founder of Questacon, Professor Mike Gore, the scholarship provides an opportunity for students from low- and middle-income countries to study an ANU Graduate Certificate of Science Communication.

🎉👏🎊 The 2025 Honours Cohort of CPAS are graduating, and we couldn't be prouder! Take a peek at the link to see what led biology and astrophysics students to take majors, minors and then honours in sci comm, and what awaits them next.

"The best part of your day is going to a ci comm course." As we bid our 2025 Honours Students congratulations and farewell, they recount what led them to CPAS, sci comm, and "one of the best years" of their lives.

🧪🧬 A wonderful opportunity to have a discussion with Australia's synthetic biology research community about the many types of 'good' this field can offer, and how best to bring about them.

At the ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology (CoESB) annual conference held at the Gold Coast (December 2-5, 2025), CPAS Director and UNESCO Chair Holder in Science Communication for the Public Good Professor Sujatha Raman convened a panel discussion on 'Synthetic Biology for the Common Good: Challenges and Possibilities', joined by CPAS Research Fellow and Centre Associate Investigator Dr Dan Santos, along with bioethicist Distinguished Professor Wendy Rogers (Macquarie) and plant molecular biologist Dr Samantha McGaughey (ANU).

The conversation covered a range of topics related to how this rapidly evolving, future-oriented field may contribute to broader societal benefit – including the nuances of related terms (public good, common good, public benefit), questions around responsibility, and the potential roles for publics and communities.

The audience further enriched the panel discussion, prompting reflections about trust in emerging technologies, and the broader political economy of research and innovation.

Many thanks to the ARC CoESB for making the panel possible, and especially to Stephanie Sng for her organisational support.

"Each of these experiences, volunteering, creating, performing, collaborating, has shown me that education can be a form of diplomacy."

Jade was the only Samoan recipient of an Australia Awards Scholarship to come to ANU. Coming from volunteering at Imagine Science Samoa, she brought a unique context and a special advocacy to her time at CPAS.

As she prepares to graduate, we look back at her story:

"Through science, art, and shared curiosity, I found connection ..." Jade Suaesi, a Masters student at CPAS through the Australia Awards Scholarship (AAS), reflects on what brought her from Samoa to Canberra – and what she'll be bringing back.

🌊 A fortnight ago, the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) stopped by CPAS for a workshop with Associate Professor Will Grant.

🗫 It was great to run a science communication workshop with such an excellent group, and just fascinating to hear their approaches to key challenges the sector is facing

CPAS holds in-demand workshops, for those looking to imbue their team with practical science communication skills and expertise. See our workshops page for more information, and contact us to hold your own! ▶️ https://cpas.anu.edu.au/study/demand-workshops
