The ANU Student Managed Fund presents its Mid-Semester Report for Semester 1, 2026.

As at 2 April 2026, the Fund's assets under management was $868,991. The Fund delivered a year-to-date (YTD) return of -7.22%, while maintaining an annualised return of 8.00% p.a. since inception in 2018, continuing to exceed its long-term objective of CPI + 4.5% returns.

Relationship Team (RT) Spotlight

A small but highly engaged group of students, the Relationship Team (RT) is responsible for raising awareness of the ANU Student Managed Fund (SMF) and fostering meaningful connections with the University and beyond. The team manages the Fund’s branding and communications across social media platforms, coordinates external engagement initiatives, and strengthens relationships with alumni, donors, and industry professionals.



RT members support outreach efforts by organising guest speaker sessions, promoting events, and engaging directly with the student community to increase awareness of the Fund’s activities and opportunities. They work closely with other SMF teams and stakeholders to ensure consistent messaging and maintain the Fund’s strong reputation within the ANU community.



While relationship management is at the heart of their work, the team also embraces creativity by designing campaigns, producing engaging content, and finding new ways to connect with students and stakeholders. Through these efforts, the RT plays a vital role in building the Fund’s profile and impact.

Risk and Compliance (R&C) Team:



The Risk & Compliance (R&C) team are a group of hardworking and analytical students responsible for ensuring all investments align with the SMF's Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) policy, which extends from the broader ANU SRI framework with additional Fund-specific constraints. The team maintains and updates the Portfolio Attribution Model, monitors compliance, assesses portfolio risks, and collaborates with the AAE and AA teams to ensure ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) considerations are integrated into investment decisions.



Additionally, R&C is responsible for the Fund's Behaviour Bias Risk Management Framework and regularly undertakes red-teaming to manage and mitigate risk stemming from behavioural bias. The team also leads the Breach Management process, where potential violations of the SRI policy are identified, investigated, and escalated to the Fund Convenor and CIO for resolution.

Thank you to Seamus Collins, the Chief Investment Officer at Team Super, for travelling from Sydney to join us in person as our guest lecturer.

Seamus walked us through the realities of managing a major industry superannuation fund – covering strategic asset allocation, active vs. passive manager selection, private credit, infrastructure investing, and how to navigate geopolitical volatility in a long-term portfolio.

Our team was invited to send questions ahead of time, and Seamus tailored the session to cover what mattered most to us – providing highly relevant and useful, real-world insight into how investment decisions are made at the highest level, and welcoming every question along the way.

Asset Allocation (AA) Team:

The Asset Allocation (AA) team is a group of driven and analytical students responsible for managing approximately 49% of the ANU Student Managed Fund's portfolio. Working across equities, fixed income and cash, the team determines the optimal asset mix to maximise long-term risk returns trade off

The AA team plays a pivotal role in positioning the SMF for sustainable performance across market cycles, using rigorous macroeconomic analysis and scenario forecasting to keep the portfolio well-diversified and resilient.

Active Australian Equities (AAE) Team:

The Active Australian Equities (AAE) team is a group of driven and detail-oriented students responsible for managing approximately 51% of the ANU Student Managed Fund's portfolio. With a security selection universe of ASX200-listed companies, the team conducts in-depth fundamental analysis to identify high-conviction equity opportunities.

AAE analysts apply classroom theory to real-world investing, using financial models and market research to inform their investment decisions.

The team conducts ongoing revaluations of their current holdings to determine whether to hold, sell or rebalance, while also having the option to pitch new stock recommendations for potential purchase to the Investment Advisory Committee (IAC). Analysts prepare detailed equity research reports and present their investment theses to the IAC for feedback and approval, ensuring all proposed investments align with the Fund's long-term objectives, including funding the RSFAS Student Managed Fund Equity Scholarship.

Chief Investment Officer (CIO): Leading the Fund

The Chief Investment Officer (CIO) leads the student team, fostering collaboration across all sub-teams while overseeing the Fund’s investment process from start to finish. As the final sign-off before Investment Advisory Committee (IAC) presentations, the CIO ensures all recommendations are thoroughly reviewed and aligned with the Fund’s objectives.

Beyond investment oversight, the CIO manages Fund operations, coordinates communication between teams and Course Convenors, and sets agendas for SMF team meetings in collaboration with Convenors.

Balancing leadership, strategic oversight, and operational management, the CIO plays a pivotal role in ensuring the Fund’s smooth operation and long-term success. By connecting the work of every sub-team, the CIO ensures the SMF delivers on its goals while maintaining its reputation for professionalism and excellence.
