ANU Law Revue

ANU Law Revue Don’t let the word ‘law’ throw you off - ANU Law Revue is an annual student-run sketch comedy show!

How it works: Each year, the executive team form a panel to hold auditions from which the Law Revue cast is created. The auditions are in early Semester 1 each year and involve acting, basic singing and basic improvisation. The selected group of students then write skits and songs which they edit and rehearse for performance in early Semester 2. Writing and rehearsing occur at evening meetings twi

ce a week in the ANU Law Common Room. Tickets for the ANU Law Revue are always for sale in the Law School foyer for two weeks leading up the performance but are also available online. Past Revues have been performed at ANU Arts Centre Main Stage & Drama Lab, The Street Theatre, The Playhouse at Canberra Theatre and Theatre 3.

Huge thank you to Woroni for coming to the show and writing such a wonderful review (of our r***e)!

During O-Week, as a bushy-tailed first-year, I auditioned for Law R***e. I made it to the second round before receiving a graciously worded rejection. As I watched this year’s production, titled Pulp Jurisdiction, I couldn’t help but grimace at the thought that I had once believed I had the come...

Thank you to Shane Rattenbury MLA!

Last Friday our team got to cheer on the incredible students of ANU Law R***e at their annual show, this year appropriately titled ✨Pulp Juristiction✨.

We even managed a cheeky snap with the case before the crowd rolled in! 🔥

The show was pure energy and talent. Future lawyers? Future theatre stars? Maybe both.

Either way, they had the whole room cracking up from start to finish.

In a year that’s been tough at ANU, nights like this are a reminder of how much joy, creativity, and community can lift all of boats.

👠 MEET THE CAST 🏕️

ARCHIE: I’m a third year PPE student who enjoys long walks on the beach and getting caught in the rain. I’m 6’4” in 4 inch heels (do the math). My Roman Empire is wondering how they built piers, because it’s like super deep in the water and also the waves would make it hard and also like kind of cold and they had piers before like cranes so it must have been like really hard and the fish would get in the way as well.

Zara Clelland: Brunette with bangs. 6’4”. Humble. Am a real law student studying law at the ANU to be a lawyer - as that is what people who study law generally pursue - and as I am a law student, I do too (BIR) (disappointment).

Isabel Moller: Issy is a human person from planet earth who has understood all of the pop culture references made in rehearsals. Definitely. She pinky promises.

How would you describe the show in three words?
ARCHIE: Many costume changes
ZARA: A really fun!
ISSY: Meta. Attention getter. Better (best r***e rawhhh) 🦖🦖

Why should people come see the show?
ARCHIE: It’s a secret but Elvis Presley is coming to watch Thursday night.
ZARA: God may make an appearance…
ISSY: We’ll be lonely in the theatre otherwise :(( but also it’s such a talented cast and crew made up of such cool people.

What’s your favourite cast memory from the show?
ARCHIE: I didn’t wear a cast during the show.
ZARA: Huddling around a campfire under the stars on our cast trip.
ISSY: Traipsing through a forest in the middle of nowhere NSW and finding the world’s creepiest kiln was pretty good cast bonding!

👮‍♂️ MEET THE CAST 🩻

Oliver Castellan: Hi, my name is Oli Castellan. Or if you’re affiliated with the Slovakian Police Force, my name is François Pierre “La Bouche” Martin. I’m an international man of mystery, the main mystery being what I’m going to do with my IR degree after uni. When I’m not performing in the ANU Law R***e, you can find me organising my Ronald McDonald wig collection, singing to the birds, and interpreting indecipherable documents (Contracts assignments). Fun fact! For a brief period I was Meryl Streep’s stunt double in the Devil Wears Prada (she hates stairs). Please come and see me in the Law R***e and buy tickets so the Slovakian Police Force cannot!

Bill McCart: Bill McCart was born on the streets of Birmingham in 1902, not a penny to his name and not a soul to sell. He stole his first loaf of bread at 3, identity theft at 8, and robbed his first bank at the ripe age of 12 with nothing but a rusty screwdriver and a coked-up rat. He eventually came to Canberra by seahorse and met the amazingly comedic and talented Law R***e cast. His old ass decided to join and be free of his life of crime. He now lives happily in Gungahlon with his 14 cats, 67 dogs, 3 sheep, 800 goldfish, and a macaque named Boris.

How would you describe the show in three words?
OLI: Roman numerals everywhere
BILL: Well well well

Why should people come see the show?
OLI: It’s very educational - it’s like if David Attenborough, a science documentary, a history documentary, and the SNL cutting room floor had a terrifying baby.
BILL: Because Alice Jordan is in the cast and she’s really fuxking funny and cool oh god I wish I was as cool as her

Tell me a silly costume you wear/something you’re looking forward to doing onstage.
OLI: I familiarise myself with looming male pattern baldness
BILL: The skeleton costume is pretty lit

🎭 MEET THE CAST 👔

ALICE: My soul passion is story telling and the fabulous magic of the arts!! I come from a long line of serious thespians - my great grandmother was in fact Nicholas Cage. I’m trained in angry opera, tap dance (on all fours), and regular tomfoolery, but am doing some soul searching in the nation’s renowned city of the arts: Canberra. I plan to be a public servant.

ALEX: People often describe me as sexy, handsome, and standing at a stately 1.8m tall. Humble as I am, I remind them that they really shouldn’t deign to compare themselves to me - it wouldn’t be fair. After all perfection isn’t a competition, it’s just something I happen to embody.

Paul Zheng: The name is fake as well as my personality. You will know the importance of having a fake name when you are my age which is also fake.

How would you describe the show in three words?
ALICE: Modern. Retelling (of). Gladiator (2).
ALEX: Sexy, Handsome, and Tall.
PAUL: Me in it!

What is your favourite part of the show?
ALICE: Geriatrics.
ALEX: Every scene I’m in.
PAUL: Me as tumbleweed.

Shout out/hype up someone else involved in the show.
ALICE: PAUL!!!!!!!
ALEX: Shout out to the whole crew and exec for being blessed by me. And Paul for being an excellent tumbleweed.
PAUL: There’s someone else in this show?

🎤 MEET THE DIRECTORS 🪴

Max Martin: Strengths: good ideas. Weaknesses: all at once.

Monique Thorp: Monique has definitely weaponised carpool karaoke before. She is currently attempting to embody the lifestyle of a chameleon, though funnily enough only her hair is changing colour.

Louis Inwood: I was a meek, awkward florist’s assistant living downtown until my life changed forever when I discovered a strange extra-terrestrial carnivorous plant that brought me tremendous success - at a lightly reprehensible cost.

How would you describe the show in three words?
MAX: Unhinged fever dream.
MONIQUE: Chaotic, eclectic, and anachronistic.
LOUIS: Avant-garde.

Why should people come see the show?
MAX: Because God gave you free will.
MONIQUE: 1) Because it’s hilarious. 2) The cast really want to be talked about on ANU Crushes.
LOUIS: Free will is an illusion - you are coming.

What’s your favourite cast memory from the show?
MAX: Our second rehearsal when everyone rocked up with hilarious original sketches and songs. That was the moment I went - this year is gonna be good.
MONIQUE: Seeing everyone’s competitive side through both Mario Kart and one incredibly cursed game of Gartic Phone.
LOUIS: Our heroic last stand against the massive Persian army at the Battle of Thermopylae.

🦆 MEET THE PRODUCERS 🧙‍♀️

Jasmine David: I’m Jasmine, I’ve been stuck in an endless time loop where I’ve been doing law r***e now for three years and haven’t seen the sun rise since. I also really like ducks.

Layla Brady: A witch who put a hex on Jasmine to keep her in Law R***e. The only way to free her is three sold out shows. Neutral on ducks.

How would you describe the show in three words?
JASMINE: A timeless classic
LAYLA: Not like that!

Tell me a silly costume you wear/something you’re looking forward to doing onstage.
JASMINE: Two blue cleaning mitts 😃
LAYLA: I’m playing an animal three different times. Not sure what the directors are trying to say about me with that. None of them are ducks though (the directors or the roles I’m playing).

Tell me a joke.
JASMINE: Knock knock?
LAYLA: Who’s there?
