How does science make it from the lab to the laws that shape our lives?

For National Science Week, four UC alumni and academics are getting together over lunch to talk about what happens between discovery and decision-making: how evidence reaches government, what Indigenous science and leadership bring to Australia's future, how we build trust in a misinformation age, and how a science degree can lead somewhere you never planned.

Join Dr Hayley Teasdale (Australian Academy of Science), Dr Chris Bourke (CSIRO), Dr Robyn Shaw and Associate Professor Claire O'Brien.

Wednesday 19 August, 12:00 to 1:00pm, online and free. Bring your lunch, your questions and your curiosity.

Tax time can feel overwhelming, but support is available. 💙

The University of Canberra Tax Clinic provides free, confidential and independent tax assistance to eligible individuals and small businesses who may not otherwise have access to professional advice.

Under the supervision of experienced tax professionals, UC students gain invaluable real world experience while helping members of our community understand their tax obligations, prepare returns, manage tax debts and respond to ATO correspondence.

As UC Vice-Chancellor Professor the Honourable Bill Shorten said, “Experience like that is gold” for both students and future employers.

It is a fantastic example of how practical learning can create a meaningful impact beyond the classroom, building job ready graduates while supporting those who need it most.

We're officially past the halfway point of the year. And if we're honest, a lot of us are starting to feel it. The lists are longer, the energy is lower, and the end of year break still feels a long way off.

That's exactly why our July Lunch & Learn is dedicated to your mental health.

Lunch & Learn: Mental Health, Finishing the Year Well will cover the early signs of burnout in yourself and others, practical ways to support someone who might be struggling, how to help yourself before you hit the wall, and an open, compassionate conversation about su***de awareness and the role we can all play.

You don't need to be in crisis to attend. Whether you're travelling well, feeling the pressure, or supporting someone who is, this session is for you.

UC alum Harrison Pike recognised for leadership in Indigenous eye health

Congratulations to University of Canberra alum Harrison Pike, who has received the Emerging Leadership Award at the 2026 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Eye Health Conference, presented by the First Nations Eye Health Alliance in Naarm/Melbourne.

A proud Wiradjuri Ngemba man, Harrison was the first Indigenous student to graduate from UC's Master of Optometry and now works as an optometrist at OPSM Canberra City, where he champions culturally safe, patient-centred care for First Nations communities.

What an incredible achievement, Harrison!
