Salary: Level 2.4 under the Public Sector CSA Agreement 2024 Applications is invited for the position of Associate to the Hon Justice Mitchell at the Supreme Court of Western Australia, Court of Appeal.

This position is for a period of 24 months (commencing January 2027).

Prospective applicants should possess the following attributes:

• a law degree, or nearly completed law degree;

• a high level of academic achievement (Honours or equivalent is desirable but not essential);

• high-level research and analytical skills;

• excellent verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills; and

• editorial skills are an advantage.

When considering whether this role is right for you, it is important to consider the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court. The Court deals with serious criminal offences, including homicide offences, as well as High Risk Serious Offenders. In the course of their duties, Associates will encounter materials (including but not limited to photographs, videos, written statements, and oral evidence) associated with these charges. This material may be confronting and/or distressing.

The Court is committed to reducing exposure to these materials for staff wherever possible and the Department of Justice offers services and resources to support staff.

The successful applicant must be available to commence on Monday 4 January 2027. Applications should include a:

• covering letter;

• curriculum vitae; and

• current academic transcript (or a certified copy).

If your application is sent by email, please provide a scan of your official academic transcript. You may be required to bring the original if you are invited to attend an interview. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and graduates are encouraged to apply.

In Sydney, we offer a summer clerkship with two 4-week rotations across two practice areas and the option to apply for the Aurora Internship, a fully funded 5- to 6-week winter internship. 🎯 Submissions Are Now Open for the 2026 Edition of the ALSA Academic Journal 🎯
 
The ALSA Education Portfolio is now accepting submissions for the 2026 Edition of the ALSA Academic Journal. Submissions will remain open from June 14 until July 14.
 
This is an excellent opportunity for students to submit their work to a high-quality academic publication, with a double blind peer review process and rigorous editing standards. We accept long-form articles of 4,000 - 12,000 words, and commentaries, case notes and book reviews of 2,000 - 4,000 words. All submissions must address Australian law, international law, or comparative legal studies with a significant Australian focus.
 
The theme for the 2026 Edition is ‘New Beginnings.’ All submissions are encouraged to follow this theme. Examples could include pieces about an emerging area of law, recent legal changes, or future ideas for law reform.
