Does your team in the Australian Public Service engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities?

Join Pat Turner scholar Natalie Bryant, along with alumni Dr Claire Sainsbury and Dr Anthony Cowley for an APS Academy MasterCraft Series event on Tuesday 22 September.

Drawing on their research in co-design and public policy, Natalie, Claire and Anthony will explore how the APS can build partnerships that centre Indigenous peoples’ lived experience and knowledge systems in policy development.

The Sir Roland Wilson Scholarship awardees are:
- Frédéric Jeanjean from Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet to research ‘Friends to all, enemies to none – (in)security, (non)alignment and sovereignty in Melanesia’ at Asia & the Pacific at ANU
- Amee McMillan from Australian Department of Home Affairs to research ‘Earnings, productivity and AI: Analysis of migrant workers in Australia using linked administrative data’ at ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences
- Bethany Millet from Australian Treasury to research ‘Essays in household savings’ at ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy
- Aruna Phabmixay from Australian Centre for Disease Control to research ‘The path of least resistance: Defining the need for enhancing One Health bacterial antimicrobial resistance surveillance in Australia’ at ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy
- Sophie Temby from Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to research ‘Understanding HIV/AIDS in the Pacific – leadership, religion and gender’ at ANU College of Asia and the Pacific.

The Pat Turner Scholarship awardees are:
- Angela Hansen from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to study a Master of Peace and Conflict Studies at ANU College of Asia and the Pacific
- Nicole Polson from the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet to study a Master of Management at ANU College of Business and Economics
- Yvette Smith from the National Disability Insurance Agency to research ‘Learning to govern diversity: Indigenous-led governance adaptations and institutional learning in NDIA policy implementation’ at ANU College of Systems and Society

Sir Roland Wilson and Pat Turner alumni are quietly steering change in policy and programs across the Australian Public Service.

Since returning to service, Pat Turner alumnus Cris Castro has been promoted to Assistant Secretary in the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations. He is responsible for driving efforts across the department to help Close the Gap. As part of this, Cris and his team have used evidence to develop guidance for staff at every level in the department to apply in their everyday work – helping everyone understand what they can do to make a difference.

Cris completed a Master of Leadership at The Australian National University ANU College of Business & Economics. He graduated in 2021.

Disability advocates have fought for decades to secure meaningful government support, and Sir Roland Wilson scholar Maathu Ranjan is determined to ensure those gains endure.

A scholar from the National Disability Insurance Agency, Maathu’s PhD examines how disability supports shape long-term outcomes for people with disability and their families. She is providing some of the first causal evidence on the impact of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

“The NDIS now supports more than 760,000 Australians - many receiving personalised supports for the first time,” Maathu explains.

“My focus is on understanding what is working, for whom, and how we can ensure sustainability for generations to come.”
