Giving a quick shout out to our Landscape & Conservation team, they look after the Acton campus and Mount Stromlo site....they have a small propagation area where they grow a range of natives and other plants that will go out across the campus. Keep an eye out for planting sessions next year - a fun way to make an impact and meet some awesome people.

What are we doing about rubbish on campus? Having waste audits! It looks messy, and it is, but it provides really great info on stuff going in the bins.
One red bin (general waste) was 7% paper and cardboard, 4.5% e-waste, 4% mixed recycling and 2% CDS (10c cans/bottles) this adds up to 17.5% recyclable items being sent to landfill.
In one of our yellow bins (mixed recycling) we had a 55.8% contamination rate...meaning that all the items went to landfill, including the recyclable ones 😟

What do you do when you have 500 old fridge magnets that are out of date with their info, and can't be recycled? Re-purpose of course. They got a couple of coats of child safe paint, and were then offered to the childcare centres on campus for the kiddos to decorate and take home. Waiting to see some of the results 😊

Yesterday we had the great pleasure to be part of the Fair Food Feastival over at the Kitchen Garden Plot. We met a lot of great people interested in sustainability on campus, had fun with the rubbish sorting game, the goldy mouldy wheel of food waste, mocktails, music and chatting with the Bruce Hall team on how they distribute food packs to those in need. We were promoting our reusable cutlery to replace the single use utensils provided by food vendors. And was lucky to get a free thyme plant to take home.....will be a valuable add when cooking. Big thanks to the Student Life team.

To recognise World Food Day on Wednesday, the Kitchen Garden Program/ACC/ANU+ teams have organised a fun event all about food, nature and sustainability. Come along and meet others that are interested and excited about food security, reducing food waste, growing your own food....and other initiatives both on campus and in the wider community. (Note: this has been moved to 29th October - rescheduled due to predicted rainy weather this week).

This morning looking through 6 public realm yellow bins from around campus, found 4 full crates of container deposit scheme items - about $8-$10 that could go to charity or someone's pocket. We are working hard to better manage our mixed recyclable bins at ANU, watch this space for the work and projects that we have coming up to address the issues and contamination rates.

Our Landscape & Conservation and ANU Green teams were part of an appreciation event held by the Kitchen Garden Program. It was great recognition of the support that areas across campus provide to each other, assisting with an important initiative that provides a sense of contribution and community to staff and students here at the ANU.

On Wednesday 9th October our Landscape & Conservation Manager, Mick Kelly, is going to lead an information walk through our grassy woodlands habitat. This is an important and threatened ecosystem that we have on campus - join us for some fresh air, time away from the desk and learn about why we need to protect and manage it. Scan the QR to register your interest in joining us.
