Why Australian Indigenous Studies? Indigenous peoples have a vital role in Australia’s past, present and future. It is important for all Australians to develop an understanding of Indigenous peoples’ cultures, societies, languages and history as we work to build a common future. Whether your career is in law, business, the sciences, the arts, development, policy, public administration or other are

as, you will meet and work with Indigenous Australians. An undergraduate Major or Minor in Australian Indigenous Studies will prepare you to appreciate the breadth and depth of Indigenous cultures, and to undertake effective engagements and collaborations. Australian Indigenous Studies is concerned with the place of Indigenous people in Australia socially, culturally, economically, politically and historically. ANU offers the opportunity to undertake Indigenous studies as an undergraduate major or minor. The subject is interdisciplinary, and it is possible to undertake courses from anthropology, archaeology, art, gender studies, history, linguistics, music, public policy and sociology. Australian Indigenous Studies students at ANU will engage with distinguished scholars working with Indigenous people and Indigenous thinkers from across Australia to develop and deepen their understandings. The ANU holds a strong commitment to teaching and research in Australian Indigenous Studies. It is home to the Australian Centre for Indigenous History, the National Centre for Indigenous Studies, the Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research, and the Tjabal Indigenous Higher Education Centre. Indigenous researchers and visiting fellows engage in topical research across many disciplines. ANU is ranked number one in Australia and number thirteen in the world for humanities and the arts (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2012–2013). Topics available for study in the Australian Indigenous Studies Major and Minor include:

Anthropology of traditional and contemporary Indigenous societies
Archaeology and cultural heritage management
Art and visual culture
Australian languages
Development studies
Gender studies
Indigenous Australian history
Language policy and politics
Music and media
Peoples, populations and communities
Public policy development and implementation
Trauma and memory studies

Graduates with a Major or Minor in Australian Indigenous Studies may expect to find employment with Indigenous and community organisations, NGOs, arts organisations, memory institutions, private enterprise, and Commonwealth, state and local government departments. Those wishing to pursue higher degree studies by coursework or research can take advantage of the many postgraduate programs offered by ANU in related fields across a wide number of disciplines.

Congratulations to one of our Alice Springs employees, Alice McRae, on her graduation from The Australian National University !

Alice attended the graduation ceremony in Canberra last week and has earned her Bachelor of Sociology and Australian Indigenous Studies.

Alice started with us as a Residential Youth Support Worker in March 2023 and has since progressed to the role of Acting Case Manager at Supported Bail Accommodation.

We are incredibly proud of Alice’ accomplishments during her tenure with Saltbush and eagerly anticipate her continued pursuit of excellence.

Alice graduated with a Major in Australian Indigenous Studies - her courses included field schools in Darwin, Kioloa, courses in race studies she took when on exchange to the US, and an internship in Alice Springs - and look what she decided to do next! Delighted that she's thriving and loving working with the young people in mparntwe.

Join the Desert Knowledges Mparntwe Field School. September 9th to 15th, 2023 in Alice Springs Northern Territory. ANU Linguistics is part of the 2023-2024 ANU Summer Scholars program. This program is for students enrolled in undergraduate or masters coursework degrees in Australia or New Zealand, and is an exceptional research opportunity for undergraduate and masters coursework students, providing insight into what a graduate research degree is all about, and the opportunity to stretch your boundaries by undertaking research projects and activities during the summer.

The nine-week program will run from 20th November 2023 to 19th January 2024. Applications close on 13 September 2023.

The Summer Research Scholarship (SRS) (for non-ANU students) includes board and accommodation at Burgmann College, ANU, for 9 weeks (including the Christmas shutdown period), and a stipend of $150/week, along with up to $1000 for travel costs. The Summer Research Internship (SRI) (for ANU students) includes a stipend of $400/week.

We especially encourage First Nations students to apply. Projects on First Nations languages include:

Muruwari language with Roy Barker Jr, Alison Mount and Jane Simpson

Wardaman language with Francesca Merlan

Warumungu language with Jane Simpson

WakkaWakka language with Denise Angelo

CALLING ALL TEACHERS - Celebrate in your classrooms with a new resource from AIATSIS.

This resource is centred around the Charlotte Allingham artworks ‘Always Here’ from the AIATSIS Collection, and aligned to the Australian Curriculum (version 9) for Year 10 History and Visual Arts.

Students explore the stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women who have created change in Australian civil rights and freedoms for both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and women.

In partnership with Living Languages, AIATSIS is excited to announce that we are running another workshop in October 2023.

We are calling for expressions of interest from groups of two-to-three people working together on their language.

The two-week workshop will be held in Canberra from 16 to 27 October and will provide Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people with the opportunity to access and recover language materials from AIATSIS and other collecting institutions.

Participants will receive training and one-on-one support to understand, interpret and use these materials in their language revitalisation efforts.
