Driven by a passion for historical Chinese foreign relations and a goal to become a foreign policy researcher, University of Sydney graduate Teresa Ho knew what it would take to conduct impactful research in Chinese studies – the ability to read Chinese sources! Through the CIW China Studies Fellowship, Teresa is now bridging that gap, building her Chinese language skills while gaining first-hand insights into Chinese society.

During my undergraduate studies, I developed an interest in Chinese history and wanted to pursue postgraduate study in Chinese studies. However, prior to this, I had never been to China and didn’t have the language expertise. So, when I saw this opportunity to study Chinese language and culture in China, I instantly applied.

There’s really no better way to learn the language than being immersed in it through daily interactions with local Chinese people. I’ve definitely had my fair share of embarrassing conversations but over time I’ve become more comfortable making small talk with shop owners or the local barista at my favourite coffee shop. Thankfully, my Chinese friends have also been incredibly patient in translating unfamiliar words, introducing me to new vocabulary and helping me understand Chinese culture.

There are lots of hidden gems in Suzhou if you’re interested in arts and culture. I’ve enjoyed attending local poetry nights, going to art markets, and listening to live music. Suzhou has a really long history of art and music, and I love seeing how the city continues to celebrate this.

One of the highlights of this Fellowship so far includes a trip I took with friends to Moganshan (莫干山) over the Labour Day long weekend. We had a really lovely time hiking through the bamboo forests and had some great conversations with local people, including a man who ran a pop-up coffee stall along the hiking trail as a hobby!
