Corrigan’s maxim for his many students was simple. As Vivian Mitsogianni has written, it was: lead a life of integrity. For students and architects, the greatest compliment he could pay anyone was to say they had “a commitment to architecture”.

Peter Corrigan, one of Australia's most influential architects, died last week. A man of endless enthusiasm and curiosity, he shaped Melbourne's cityscape and influenced a generation of architects.

“A building for young people,” was Peter Corrigan’s description of his most provocative and public building, RMIT’s Building 8 on Swanston Street. For Corrigan, who died on December 1 after a long illness, work as an educator at RMIT and architect with Edmond and Corrigan was always directed at the next generation.

One of the architect's most famous works was RMIT's Building 8 on Swanston Street.

Peter Corrigan, one of the most prominent and prolific Australian architects and partner in Edmond and Corrigan, architects of RMIT's Building 8, passed away Thursday morning, 1st of December 2016.

Peter Corrigan Professor of Architecture at RMIT University, Melbourne, has exerted a profound and long-lasting influence on the architectural profession in Australia through his practice, writing and commitment to teaching design. As the recipient of a multitude of honours, including the RAIA Gold Medal (2003), he has built a reputation equal to any living architect in Australia, yet throughout it all he has continued to deliver design studios and lectures in architectural history at RMIT University. From 1975 to the present day he has maintained this commitment to architectural education while also engaged in the turmoil of successful practice. This represents a remarkable continuity of contribution. http://architectureau.com/articles/2013-neville-quarry-architectural-education-prize/

Peter Corrigan recognized at the 2013 Australian Achievement in Architecture Awards.

RMIT New Academic Street
a design collaboration between Lyons, Minifie van Schaik Architects, NMBW, Harrison White and Maddison Architects

The New Academic Street is a major investment by RMIT University to dramatically transform existing buildings 8, 10, 12 and 14 to reconfigure the heart of their campus and dramatically transform the ‘student experience’. The scope of this major project involves expansion of the existing central University Library, more than doubling informal student learning seating, expanding the retail offerings to students, and creating a new ‘media precinct’ at the lower levels of the redevelopment.

Client: RMIT University
Site: Cnr Franklin, Bowen and Swanston Streets
