📢 Media-making as a form of media education: the value of engaging children as agentive media producers

John Potter has been working in the field of media education for the past 30 years. In this talk, John will reflect on different strategies for educating children and young people about media - including the differences and similarities between ‘media literacy’ and ‘media education’. In particular, John will reflect on the value of engaging children as agentive media producers and how he uses media making and hybrid arts approaches as a way of opening dialogue about a range of subjects with children: their media consumption, their play, their hopes and fears and their ideas for how the future might be. John will draw on examples from various media-making projects tackling topics such as children’s feelings around the global pandemic, AI and digital life, and live in contemporary urban environments. All told, John will make a case for paying more attention to children’s media production and media-making as a central element in the future development of media education.

🎥 Monash Student Film Continues to Ride the Wave of Success at ATOM Awards and Byron Bay International Film Festival

👉 Women of the Waves, a short documentary film made by Monash Arts students about a community of women surfers, has extended its extraordinary run of successes with both a nomination for a prestigious national Australian Teachers of Media (ATOM) Award, and selection to screen at the Bryon Bay International Film Festival in October 2026. Having recently screened at the 2026 Melbourne Documentary Film Festival (MDFF) at Cinema Nova and already awarded the Best Documentary award at the 11th National and International Benalla Short Film Festival in 2025, the film has now played at multiple festivals across Australia.

🌊 Women of The Waves celebrates the impact community has in breaking barriers to access for female surfers in a male dominated sport. Created as part of the 2025 Monash Arts Film Studies unit ATS3983 Screen Project: From Film Theory to Media Production in the School of Media, Film and Journalism, this award nomination and major screening continues a string of MFJ student documentary film successes at range of film festivals over the past year.

🎬 The film was created by Monash students Producer Emma Oxley, Director Han Soo Yoo, Cinematographer Viktoriia Katsarska, and Sound Director Ricardo Jansen Correa.

🍿 The Byron Bay International Film Festival is a major showcase and celebration of film running from the 16-25 of October. Women of the Waves will play in the Salt in Her Veins program at the Brunswick Picture House on Sunday 18 October, 6pm.

🎞 The ATOM Awards have celebrated excellence in screen content, recognising outstanding achievements across education, industry, and emerging creative practice throughout Australia and New Zealand since 1982. ATOM Awards winners will be announced at special ceremony at ACMI, Federation Square in Melbourne on Friday 30 October at 7pm.

🎸 Can a Rock Band Make History - 21 Theses on The Tenementals #6

The Tenementals is an intergenerational group of academics, musicians and artists creating a transmedia history of their native Glasgow. This history includes songs, music videos, podcasts, blogposts, band artwork, conference presentations, academic essays, band ephemera, press articles, photographs, installation, website – everything that the band produces is part of this history.

The Tenementals’ debut album, Glasgow: A History (Vol. I of VI),was released in 2024 and we will release our second album in spring 2027. The Tenementals explore the extent to which songs might be regarded as an instance of ‘making history'a perspective which sees song-making as an expanded notion of History. The central research question is fundamentally about the ontology of epistemology: “What would History look, sound and feel if it were created by a rock band?”

🔎 The Tenementals is a Wild Research project. We have one foot in the university sector and one foot in Glasgow’s vibrant music scene. The Tenementals moves to its own beat. It runs on the logics of a rock band, not the metricised logics of the neoliberal university. In approaching our work, we refuse the critical/creative binary: ours is a research project and its outputs come in multifarious form, with no one form prioritised over another.

In ‘21 Theses on The Tenementals # 6’, members of the band will present an in-process account of their work.

Event presented by the Monash Gender and Media Lab 👉: How much screen time is harmful to a child’s brain? Does “high stimulation” screen time lead to more tantrums? Or hinder language development? For parents of young children, these sorts of questions are everywhere - in news headlines and social media content, arguments with partners, and conversations with friends. Although scholars have long criticised “screen time” as a way of understanding children’s digital media use, it continues to dominate everyday understandings.

In this research seminar, Kate Mannell (Deakin University), shares insights from her latest book, Screen Time and the Impossibility of Modern Parenting. Rather than debate the effects of children’s media use or the validity of “screen time,” as a concept, Kate’s new book steps back to examine screen time discourse as a cultural phenomenon itself. Drawing on studies of social media influencers, interviews with parents, and analyses of narratives about screen time harms, it offers a fascinating study of sciency talk, media panics, intensive parenting cultures and the everyday anxieties of families trying to figure out how to do the best they can when it comes to their kids’ media use.

Following the seminar, join us for another instalment of our Gender and Media Lab conversations: “How Should a Person Be? Expertise on Social Media.” Inspired by Kate’s study of social media ‘experts’ on children’s screen time use, we will be chatting about the importance of social media as a site of knowledge cultures.
