2019 HARTUNG LECTURE | 13 August 2019 | 10-11:30 | Federation University Gippsland
Collecting the Elements – Tales from the Periodic Table
The Hartung lectures aim to inspire years 10 - 11 students and promises to be an engaging and educational experience
Our Guest Lecturer for 2019 is Prof Stuart Batten FRACI CChem from Monash University
Bio- Stuart Batten grew up on a farm in country Victoria, before getting a BSc (Hons) (1991) and a PhD (1996) at the University of Melbourne. After postdoctoral positions in both Australia and the UK, he was appointed as a Lecturer at Monash University in 2006, where he is now a Professor. His research interests include inorganic chemistry and X-ray crystallography, with a particular focus on designing new materials with interesting properties, such as magnetism or carbon dioxide capture. He is the author of one book and more than 300 other publications, has won numerous prizes for research excellence, and is one of the most highly cited chemists in Australia.
Lecture Abstract - The periodic table is one of the crowning achievements of science; the Mona Lisa of chemistry. All matter in heaven and earth is simply a combination of the elements contained within the periodic table, and an element’s position within the table summarises its sub-atomic structure and explains its chemistry. It fascinated me as a child, and guided my career as an adult. Recently I embarked on a quest to collect pure samples of all the (stable) elements, and this lecture will tell some of the stories of those elements I’ve accumulated from both completing that quest and a 30 year career of playing with them
The aim of the Lecture is to take the students on a tour of the periodic table, with stops along the way to tell stories of selected elements or groups of elements
The Lecture will contain demonstrations and possible video clip content
