Graduation ceremonies are full of tradition and nothing embodies that more profoundly than the Ceremonial Mace. You’ll probably recognise the ornamental club, but you’d be forgiven for not knowing what it is — or what it’s for. Enjoy this throwback from a past graduation, where Joe Kabalan, Director of External Engagement and Events, reveals what makes it so special.

What’s it made out of? It has a shaft of polished Australian black bean wood, and a head and a foot of cast and beaten silver. The orb of the head carries the University coat of arms and is supported by flames symbolising the light given to the world increasing knowledge.

What’s on the mace? At the foot are four oval panels each engraved with a device suggested by the donor as identifying General Sir John Monash.

Keep an eye out for it at the October graduation ceremonies.

Endometriosis affects up to one in seven Australian girls, women and individuals assigned female at birth by age 50. It has no known cure and it takes an average of eight years from the onset of symptoms to get a diagnosis. Last month, Australia's first national Endometriosis Management Plan was launched.

Project lead, Monash alumnus and Head of Monash University’s Department of General Practice, Professor Danielle Mazza, said the EMP was designed to ensure patients with persistent symptoms were not left waiting for the next step in their care, “We want patients to understand their condition, know what their options are and have a clear management plan they can return to and review with their GP, rather than feeling there is nowhere to turn.”

Most study plans assume you have your evenings.

Lulu did not. She came through the out-of-home care system, working to provide for herself and her sister. Without an Achieving Potential Scholarship she simply could not have afforded to attend uni.

Scholarships like hers are funded with the help of alumni and donors. Read Lulu's story: http://mona.sh/2kC550ZULpo

Everyone remembers a lecturer. Almost nobody remembers the reading list.

Today is World Teachers' Day! Every graduate reading this had someone at the front of a lecture theatre or a tutorial room who changed how they think, and probably never knew it.

The one who marked your work honestly. The one who stayed back after the tutorial. The one who wrote you the reference. The one whose offhand comment you are still repeating in meetings.

Tell us about the Monash lecturer or tutor who changed things for you. A first name is enough.

Join us at MUMA for the first major solo exhibition of First Nations collective the Pitcha Makin Fellas.

Known for their bold stamp paintings, breastplates, projections and books, the Fellas’ work powerfully challenges racism, colonialism, and social injustice, while honouring Country and caring for community. The exhibition celebrates their legacy of humour, resistance and community connection.
