Monash IR faculty is a big and crowded place and it can feel incredibly lonesome at times. Classrooms are dispersive and it's very hard to make friends and stick with them throughout the semester. Therefore, the MIRSA is here to help students build connections, not only with peers, but also with tutors, teachers and other experts. Our main objective will be that of creating a community where IR st

udents can communicate and help each other, building up their CVs with new skills and hopefully getting practical tips for future jobs. Our weekly agenda will feature:

- social activities;
- study groups/sessions;
- meetings/conferences with experts in any related field;
- an ongoing search for internships/job offers;
- whatever else comes up that is fun and useful! Love,
The MIRSA Committee

China's claim escalates. It renames 11 regions in the Arunachal Pradesh (an Indian province) and claims it has the sovereign rights to do so.

The repeated claims of China have been denied by Indian Foreign Ministry as they state, "Arunachal Pradesh has and will always be an integral part of India".

China's never-ending moves have shaken up the stability in the Asia-Pacific region as the diplomatic ties between India and China remain in troubled waters.

China's rising aggression in the South China Sea calls for strengthening the US and the Philippines defence cooperation🇺🇸🇵🇭

They are set to amplify the war drills by conducting the first ever fighter jets training in the South East Asian country.

The maritime security in the Indo-Pacific had demanded the great powers like the US to engage in military partnerships with countries in the Asia Pacific as it previously announceed deployment of nuclear armed submarine to South Korea.

Is China's intent growing that aggressive for countries around it to bolster their defence strategies?

BRICS has inspired many other nations to move away from the US Dollar 💰 hegemony.
Paving the way for a new currency in the market, BRICS is all set to shift the global power from the West to the East as predicted by many political scholars in the past🌏

How will it affect the financial economy? The international trade will find itself in a new environment. Is it for better or otherwise... Let's presume the former until further notice from BRICS! 📊📑

Meanwhile, do you think China is the driving force behind this strategy given it's persistent effort to compete with the US and establish itself as the economic giant in Asia and the world since the 1970s? 🧐

China blocks Philippines' routine patrol on the South China Sea route, adamantly claiming the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) - almost causing a perilous collision in the waters.

China has breached the United Nations Convention on the Law of Sea (UNCLOS) and destabilised freedom of navigation inspite of International arbitrary court's ruling that China's claim on the entire South China Sea is "ill-founded".

How is the South East Asian territory going to manoeuvre the threats presented by Chinese Navy?

Team MIRSA extends its heartfelt gratitude to the honorable speakers who spared their time to engage with students on the pressing issues of the QUAD at Monash University.
Our team would also like to thank AIIA Victoria for collaborating and working with us for this event.

We were privileged to have industry experts from different regions grace our event and share their valuable insights on the "Future of the Indo-Pacific."

From the formation of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD) to the diplomatic progress of the QUAD countries, our speakers highlighted some crucial points on the importance of upgrading maritime security, defence mechanisms, geopolitics, and trade to secure and ensure an open and convenient Indo-Pacific.

Unprecedented events like Russia's invasion of Ukraine and China's aggression towards the South China Sea and the Indo-Pacific have raised major concerns over the security of the QUAD Alliance.
With all alliances increasing their military power, the question arises if this could lead to further conflict among the countries.

Our guest speakers, gave us incredible perspectives explicating the objectives and future goals of QUAD in the best interest of their foreign affairs. They also highlighted the impact of military expansion, especially, in the Indo-Pacific and how it affects diplomatic relations with China in the long run.

We sealed the event by building networks with students from different backgrounds and academic professionals who added their experience in Global affairs.

We look forward to seeing you all at our future events.
Until then, follow us on Instagram .monash and LinkedIn for more updates!

Have a great week ahead✌️

A surge in arms trade. Is it a call for conflict in the near future?

Europe and East Asia are increasingly investing in their military assets since the past 5 years.

Even as arms transfers have declined globally those to Europe have risen sharply due to the tensions between Russia and most other European States.

It is likely that the invasion of Ukraine will further limit Russia’s arms exports. This is because Russia will prioritize supplying its armed forces and demand from other states will remain low due to trade sanctions on Russia and increasing pressure from the USA.
What are your thoughts on the surge of arms?Comment down below and share your thoughts in the comment section.
