Since August, student Sophia has been enrolled at National Taiwan University, studying international law under visiting academics.

It's all part of the New Colombo Plan (NCP) scholarship which fosters meaningful cultural exchange between Australia and the Indo-Pacific region by supporting Australian undergraduates to study and undertake internships in the region. NCP is delivered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Before the year closes, Sophia will commence a 12-week one-on-one Mandarin study at a Mandarin language school in Taipei, after which she will intern with Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ). It's a unique way to build hands-on experience in cross-border commercial relationships.

What's Sophia's advice for students thinking about applying for the next NCP?

"How many chances in your twenties do you get to go overseas for nine months at a time?" Sophia said. "If you're even a little bit interested, just give it a go and see where the journey takes you."

2025 was a year of firsts for Monash Law, including the first year for our new Dean of Law, Professor Steven Vaughan, who arrived in his office on the day Monash University reopened for 2025.

We proudly conferred honorary doctorates on The Hon. Debra Mortimer, Dr Patrick Loftus Hills, and Dr Deborah Glass OBE: alums whose principled leadership continues to inspire. We also welcomed Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG as the guest of honour at our inaugural Pink Drinks, celebrating LGBTIQA+ members of the Victorian legal community.

Earlier in the year, we celebrated the appointment of Chief Justice Richard Niall as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria, following predecessors the Hon. Anne Ferguson and the Hon. Marilyn Warren AC KC, marking three consecutive Monash alums in this role. At the same time, educators Professor Gerry Nagtzaam, Associate Professor Julie Debeljak, and Associate Professor Gaye Landsdell were presented with 25 Year Anniversary Awards from the Chancellor of Monash University!
