What’s it like to work in economics?

What do you think of when someone tells you they’re an economist? Is it all spreadsheets and complicated maths equations? The truth is so much broader than
you might expect.

‘While econometricians, like those working for the big banks, make up one facet of the world of economics, there’s a whole world out there for economics graduates’,
says Deakin graduate Ranya Shahwan, Executive Director at WorkSafe.

Don’t buy into the stereotypes Ranya says it’s important not to buy into the stereotypes of what we might think economists do.

‘There is the assumption that to be an economist, you must love working on Excel spreadsheets all day,’ she says.

‘Economics can take you to any number of places. You can combine it with international relations, politics, law…You can merge it with a range of fields, and it will set you up well for your career.’

Ranya completed a double degree in Arts and Commerce at Deakin and completed her honours before being offered a graduate role with the Victorian Department of Treasury and Finance.

A career evolving over time Ranya’s career has evolved over time, and she says her
ability to think like an economist when problem-solving has served her well.

‘I started out in specific economics, then more general economics, and now I’m not working in economics but in more general policy, and I still apply it as those skills are
definitely valued,’ she says.

‘Economics is probably one of the best ways to start your career, and people always value an economics background on a resume.

Valuable Tips for Successful Interviews

Many candidates lose their jobs in the first minute of the interview by not thinking carefully about their initial impact. John Lees shares his expert interview tips.

1 Don’t waste the opening moments
Many candidates lose their jobs in the first minute of the interview by not thinking carefully about their initial impact. Interviewers make a quick initial decision about your personality from the moment you arrive based on how you look and sound. Dress as if you already work there, and you’ve just been promoted. Make those initial seconds as relaxed and upbeat as possible, even when discussing your journey.

2 Don’t over-deliver
Most candidates say too much. Interviewers are not that interested, and will usually accept a short, positive answer and move on. Practise compressing your evidence into good short stories at most 3 minutes long, setting out what problem you were handling, what you did, how you did it, and what the result was.

3 Don’t act like a stranger
Leave your coat, umbrella, and bag in reception. Just take a slim folder in the interview room containing the necessary documents, and you will look like an employee rather than a visitor.

4 Don’t try to wing difficult questions
Don’t duck predictable questions about your know-how and skill level – think carefully about good examples. Equally predictable questions cover strengths (talk about qualities that match the job) and weaknesses (talk about skills you are improving and make it clear that you’re a fast learner).

John Lees has written a wide range of career books. His 2013 titles are Just The Job!, his first systematic guide to job searching, and Knockout CV, a comprehensive guide to writing a winning CV.
