UWA School of Biological Sciences

UWA School of Biological Sciences This is the page for School of Biological Sciences at The University of Western Australia

The School of Biological Sciences is based at The University of Western Australia. The School offers coursework and research opportunities in animals and industry, animal structure and function, ecology, evolutionary biology, experimental and regenerative neurosciences, marine biology, neuroecology, science communication and wildlife management. The School is also closely involved with the UWA Ins

titute of Agriculture and Oceans Institute, and houses the Centre for Evolutionary Biology. We’re a research-intensive university committed to exploring the unknown, challenging convention and making things happen. The School of Biological Sciences is a large, multi-disciplinary School with research and teaching focussed on understanding and conserving life on earth. As biologists, we are passionate about how living organisms – plants and animals – live, work, sense the world around them, communicate, reproduce, and can be managed, conserved and restored in threatened environments, as well as how they provide clues to advance medical science and treatment. We are also committed to the communication of science to the public and external stakeholders. Our researchers tackle grand challenges in the laboratory and at field sites across the globe, studying plants and animals in natural as well as managed environments, including below and on the ground and in the air as well as in fresh and marine waters. We use a wide range of techniques spanning scales from molecular and genetic to individuals as well as to populations and higher order ecosystems. Understanding the vulnerabilities and resilience of a diverse range of species in different environments is informing us all as global citizens to value and protect life on earth and ensure a sustainable future.

Please join us this Thursday 1th June, 1pm at the IOMRC Auditorium to hear a PhD exit seminar:

Alan Gojanovic – “Breaking the bottleneck: Methods for enhancing post-settlement survival in coral reef fishes”

If you are late or unable to stay for the whole seminar, you are still more than welcome. Please be courteous to our speakers and try to minimise disruption during talks. If you are unable to make the talk in person, please let us ([email protected]) know, and we will send you a Teams link. Please note that requests for Teams access need to be sent in a timely manner, those sent too close to the seminar start time may not be fulfilled.

As a reminder, PhD students are required to attend the SBS Seminars to qualify for confirmation of candidature. These talks are a great way to learn more about the breadth of fantastic research happening across the school, and it would be amazing to see you all there!

See you at the seminar!
