From studying at CDU to helping protect one of the Himalayas' most iconic threatened species. 🏔️

CDU alumnus Jigme Tshering has dedicated his career to protecting Bhutan's extraordinary wildlife and ecosystems.

Now Chief of the Species Conservation Division at the Royal Society for Protection of Nature, Jigme helps lead conservation programs that bring together scientific research, community knowledge and policy.

A major focus of his work is protecting the globally threatened Black-necked Crane — a species deeply connected to Bhutanese culture and the health of the country's high-altitude wetlands.

By working alongside farmers, young people and local institutions, Jigme is helping ensure conservation protects biodiversity while respecting the communities and traditions connected to it.

Jigme is a finalist for the 2026 CDU International Alumni Award.

An architecture concept made with crochet? That’s Jorja’s kind of design. 🧶✨

Jorja chose architecture at Charles Darwin University because it brings together creativity, structure and innovation, with plenty of room to explore her own ideas.

For the 2026 SONA Super Studio Design Competition, Jorja and her group stepped away from digital tools and brought their concept to life through crochet.

This year’s brief, “Pause, Gather, Feel”, challenged architecture students to design physical spaces around an artwork, artefact or narrative that encourage people to slow down, observe and connect. A chance to think differently and get hands-on with design. 💭

Jobe’s pathway to Medicine wasn’t straightforward. He started his uni journey in Sydney but returned home to Darwin to be closer to his support network. Now he’s part of the CDU Menzies Medical Program at Charles Darwin University and working towards becoming a doctor. For Jobe, coming home helped him find his way forward. 🥼🩻

From award-winning CDU apprentice to running one of the Territory's recognised automotive businesses. 🔧

CDU alumna Beckie Kernich is the owner, manager and lead qualified mechanic at Berry Springs Mechanical — but her journey in the automotive industry started years earlier.

In 2016, Beckie was named CDU Automotive Light Vehicle Student of the Year. Since then, she's gone on to build an award-winning business, with Berry Springs Mechanical named the 2024 Australian Small Business Champion for Automotive Mechanical Repairs.

And she's using that experience to give back.

Through her free Bec's Basics classes, Beckie teaches practical vehicle maintenance skills — from checking oil and coolant to changing a tyre — helping everyone from learner drivers to seniors feel safer and more confident around their cars.

Beckie is a finalist for the 2026 CDU Alumni Award for Industry Excellence.

From design drawings to an active construction site, our engineering students are seeing how their studies translate into practice. 👷

During a recent visit to a AKJ Services works site, Charles Darwin University students explored earthworks, stormwater drainage, and sewer and water supply services firsthand.

The visit gave students a closer look at how infrastructure takes shape, with opportunities to ask questions and learn from the people delivering it.

Thank you to NT Logistics and Infrastructure, AKJ Services and the site team for welcoming our students and sharing your expertise.

Experiences like these connect classroom learning with the practical challenges of building infrastructure in the Northern Territory.
