In Year 11, I completed the Certificate II in Rural Operations with UQ Skills, and the Certificate III in Rural Operations in Year 12.

I learned practical skills in animal handling, livestock handling, operating tractors, side-by-side driving and chemical handling.

The courses were hands on, which meant that I got to learn by doing. That made a huge difference for me, considering I didn’t come from an agricultural background.

I was able to see and use the campus facilities, meet students and get a real experience of UQ student life – it was great.

It was actually the reason I chose to study my undergraduate degree at UQ.

I grew up in a very rural environment surrounded by animals from as early as I can remember.

It was a natural path for me to pursue veterinary nursing.

Being able to help animals and people in their time of need was what made the job so rewarding.

When I started a family, I began to transition into education, joining UQ Skills (then G-VEC) as a trainer and assessor while still working part-time in industry.

As the organisation grew, I got more involved in the coordination side of things.

Now, 16 years later, I am excited to keep evolving, embracing new ideas and supporting our students to achieve their goals. That’s what it’s all about.

We were proud to welcome young people from Multicultural Australia this week for a Campus Experience Day at UQ St Lucia.

The day gave students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds the opportunity to explore what’s possible, learn more about study pathways with UQ Skills and The University of Queensland, connect with current students, and discover the support available to help them succeed.

From hands-on workshops in law and entrepreneurship to a guided tour of the campus, it was a chance to build confidence, spark ambition, and explore their study options.

We look forward to staying connected to the students and supporting them on their post-school learning journey.

A huge thank you to Deena Cooper - Equestrian Performance Psychologist, for sharing her expertise with our Diploma of Equine Management students today! 🙏🐴

Deena covered some fascinating topics, including the science behind the human-horse bond 🧠🐎, effective breathing techniques to help regulate the nervous system (and why it’s important to practice these strategies before anxiety hits!) 🌬️, and the key factors that make up the healthy mind platter for riders.

We’re so grateful for the valuable insights and practical advice Deena provided. Looking forward to seeing how our students apply these skills in their equine journeys!

Today, our Farriery students had the opportunity to participate in a hands-on clinic with renowned Master Farrier Robert Jukes.

During this session, they gained valuable skills in horseshoe making, tool crafting, and the art of horse shoeing.

Robert, who completed his apprenticeship and honed his craft here in Australia over many years, moved to the United States in 2023, where he established his own business in Texas.

As a proud member of the World Championship Blacksmiths Team and a participant in several elite blacksmithing events, Robert brings a high level of expertise to his craft.

A huge thank you to Robert for taking the time to share his wealth of knowledge with our students! 🐴🔨
