In Term 1, our Year 11 Art students were challenged to create a portrait representing themselves, or someone who has made an impact on their life.

Our class investigated a range of master artists such as Ben Quilty, Julie Dowling, Henri Matisse, and Frida Kahlo, before using traditional drawing and painting mediums to create their own portrait.

Well done to all of our artists! Here is a sample of our collection of work, and be sure to check out the Library in the coming weeks to see the full collection 🎨

In Week 2, Olivia from Red Box Design Group visited Hawker College and consulted with past and present students, alongside teachers leading our Cultural Integrity team.

During the discussion, we sat under the gum trees and expressed appreciation for our ability to learn and work on Ngunnawal land. The group explored conceptual landscape design ideas for a future Yarning Circle on the site, and how this space could meaningfully make links with our connection to Country. Ideas shared about nature, symbolism, and the purpose of the space were thoughtful and we are excited to see them come to life.

Thank you to our staff, community members and to Olivia for the ongoing work you do on this project.

If you are a member of our school community who has Indigenous connection to Country, or are interested in contributing stories, ideas and artwork concepts to the Yarning Circle space and gardens, please do reach out and we will put you in touch with the team.

It’s National Careers Week, and there’s no better way to celebrate than by helping students take their first steps toward the future, which is exactly what happened at Hawker College this week.

The school was buzzing with energy as a wide range of mini-events helped bring career possibilities to life. Over 30 different organisations attended the onsite careers expo to help students explore multiple pathways and answer any questions they may have had. A presentation by The Careers Department was held in the Murranji Theatre to spread awareness of the broad range of industries students can seek employment in and tips on how to get there. Meanwhile, several former Hawker College students who graduated from the school within the past decade also attended as part of an Alumni Panel to talk about their lives and careers following graduation from the school, adding a nice personal touch to the Expo.

Careers Expos are taking over our colleges during the next two weeks, with Erindale College, UCSSC Lake Ginninderra College, Canberra College, and Gungahlin College also throwing their own events to celebrate this fantastic week.

As these students start to close the chapter on 13 years of schooling, it’s fantastic to see the doors opening to the next stage of their lives.

On 4-6 May, students from Outdoor Recreation braved the savage weather of Namadgi National Park. Beginning from Orroral Valley in the pouring rain, we slogged uphill along the Australian Alps Walking Track (AAWT) to find a beautiful lunch spot and respite from the relentless ascent at Pond Creek. We slipped and slid downhill to find our refuge at Cotter Flats just before sunset. Tired legs and warm temperatures led to a great night’s sleep.

After a sleep in and diverse version of breakfast, we set out on a day trip with light packs and full stomachs, aiming to reach the NSW border. Again we were confronted by relentless fire trail climbs but were rewarded with a brief patch of mobile signal, much to the relief of those with multi-year streaks on the apps.

On the second night we had enough time for bird baths in the creek and a spot of frisbee before retreating to our tents to shelter from the encroaching cold. We awoke at various points through the night to our own shivering and the howls of wild dogs. Frozen tents (inside and out) and a heavy frost greeted us on the final day, but the sun came out and we embarked upon the long fire trail grind to escape our campsite and retreat to the bus. Despite several rangers passing us in their 4WDs, all students pushed through and stormed home on their own two feet, with some proclaiming this to be the hardest trip they’d ever done (or may ever do again!). Thanks to Rob Harriden for joining our class for the week to make this trip happen and all the logistical support from our front office team.
