Indigenous Studies at Swinburne

Indigenous Studies at Swinburne For current and ex-staff, students & colleagues of the Indigenous Studies program at Swinburne Unive Indigenous Studies at Swinburne is the study of Australia.

It’s an examination of Indigenous Australian culture, history and people – the oldest living culture on the planet. We look at the historical and contemporary issues that have shaped Indigenous Australian culture, and we critically examine the factors of mainstream Australian history and society that have created and shaped our understanding of Indigenous Australia. Indigenous Studies aims to educ

ate all students about connections between past and present and delineate the long-held cultural notions of self and other. We seek to embrace Indigenous ways of learning through such connections with country, history, and community. All units of study have contributions from guest speakers, including local Elders and other community experts, as well as excursions to take students to significant sites on Wurundjeri country. We take a particular focus on Wurundjeri culture, and look to help students find ways for them to make their own connections to Wurundjeri culture and history.

About 6 years ago (maybe more) my mum, Viv, and I dropped into Camp Coorong to visit good friend Aunty Ellen Trevorrow.

A few Ngarrindjeri Elders and academics from Swinburne University of Technology were sorting though hundreds of old photos.

We had a chat about the Ara Irititja technology that many Anangu use to document and share photos and stories.

Pretty special to be with Aunty Ellen and community at Ngarrindjeri Ruwe Empowered Communities building this weekend for the official launch of the first 2,000 digitised photos and videos as part of the Ngarrindjeri Photography Project.
