There are many incredible dementia advocates around Australia.

One of them is Val Fell OAM. Among Val’s many achievements is organising the Illawarra Shoalhaven Dementia Public Forum, and this year marks the 15th event on Wednesday 9 September.

Hundreds of people attend the Forum, and if you live in the area and would like to go along, you can find the details on Eventbrite.

Val, who has completed a number of the Wicking Dementia Centre’s MOOCs, regularly attends other aged care events and always makes time to chat to our team.

Falls are a major concern for older people and can reduce their ability to remain independent.
Falls prevention in aged care is everyone’s business.
To support education in this area, Equip Aged Care Learning has a free, online module called Prevention of Falls.
While not every fall can be prevented, there are lots of things we can do to reduce the risk, whether in aged care facilities, or at home.
Learn more in this short module here, https://equiplearning.utas.edu.au/

🎓 This week the Wicking Dementia Centre celebrated an incredible milestone, with 181 students graduating across our education programs.

We were delighted to welcome 40 graduates to Hobart, where they shared in a memorable graduation ceremony, heard an inspiring Valedictorian address from Master’s graduate Louise de Silva, and connected with fellow students, families, and staff.

The celebrations continued with the graduation of four higher degree research students. Congratulations to (L -R) Dr Lyzette Matthews, Dr Laura De Paoli, Dr Adelene Chiam, and Dr Kaylee Rudd on this outstanding achievement.

To all our graduates, thank you for your dedication, passion, and commitment to improving the lives of others. We are proud to be part of your journey. 🎉👏

DREAM is all about helping to support aged care workers to care for people living with dementia.

If you’re not sure about going getting involved, or how effective DREAM Education is, have a look at these recent survey results.

Of around 150 people surveyed about the Navigating Behaviour module, these numbers agreed or strongly agreed:
đź’ 97% I understand that there is a relationship between dementia and behaviour change
đź’ 93% I can describe common changes in behaviour for people living with dementia
đź’ 96% I can explain why it is important to understand changed behaviour in respite
đź’ 93% I can recognise how to support changed behaviour in people with dementia while in respite

DREAM, which can be found here, https://dream.utas.edu.au/program, is funded by the Australian Government and is free to access.
