Six junior doctors. Five days. One unforgettable journey through the Pilbara.
BRIDGE has crossed the 26th parallel and taken rural medical immersion to a whole new level — connecting six junior doctors with the people, places, health services and communities that make working in the Pilbara such a unique experience.
From walking among the ancient rock art of Murujuga and learning from Traditional Owners, to touring hospitals and health services, getting hands-on with simulation training, and meeting local clinicians—this was rural medicine in its fullest sense.
A huge thank you to everyone who made this possible:
Cultural & Community Partners: Thank you Murujuga Aboriginal Corporationfor the cultural awareness training and unforgettable rock art tour and Dampier Mission to Seafarers for the Dampier Port tour of Rio Tinto Dampier operations.
Health Campus Teams: We were warmly welcomed by the WA Country Health Service teams at Roebourne Hospital, Karratha Health Campus, and Hedland Health Campus who shared their passion for healthcare in the Pilbara.
SIM Training: A special shout-out to the incredible crews at Hedland Health Campus and Royal Flying Doctor Service WA for putting our doctors through their paces with some fantastic simulation training.
General Practice & Networking: We are so grateful to the teams at Sonic Health Plus, Panaceum Medical Group - Karratha, Wirraka Maya Health Service Aboriginal Corporation, Mawarnkarra Health Service Roebourne, and Yaandina, Roebourne for welcoming us into your clinics and sharing your expertise in rural general practice. Thank you Pilbara Health Professionals Network, for connecting our doctors with the local health professional community.
Our Guides: Many thanks to Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) Regional Director of Training (WA) Dr Cherelle Fitzclarence, and WA Regional Training Hubs Pilbara Medical Coordinator Dr Graeme Fitzclarence, for sharing their knowledge and experience throughout the journey. A special thank you to our Pilbara project officer Lehna McLean, for coordinating an ambitious itinerary, ensuring our visiting doctors got a genuine taste of life and medicine in the region.
