Translation is just one part of bringing Scripture to communities. It must also be accessible and understood, facilitated by the use of culturally and linguistically relevant materials.

Scripture Engagement is one of our classes this semester here at SILA, taught by Philip Swan. Scripture Engagement draws on anthropological perspectives, a knowledge of a variety of media, and different methods of contextualisation to make the locally translated Christian Scriptures available to people of all nations and languages.

Managing language development programs is a complex matter. We can help you explore the issues involved and develop the essential skills to contribute effectively in this area.

We will be running our on-campus intensive unit, Language Program Management 13–24 July. Taught by Dr David Nicholls and Graham Scott, this unit will equip you with knowledge and skills in planning, managing and evaluating progress in a community translation, literacy and education or Scripture engagement project, or across multiple projects.

Developing literacy skills in a local language can create new opportunities for people to engage with their world. But how can people learn to read when there are no materials available in their language? Students in the Introduction to Literacy class at SIL Australia this semester are learning the theoretical principles and practical strategies to develop materials and structure literacy programs that will enable people to learn to read and write in their community languages.

On Wednesday 11 March our scholar in residence, Dr Timothy Lewis, gave a lecture on Matthew 5:3-10, “Does Jesus want people to be poor in spirit?”

This lecture provided insight into the poetic structure of the Beatitudes, inspiring a deeper understanding of the semantic contrasts within the text.

Missed it? A recording will be available on our website shortly.

One of the classes running at SILA this semester is Introduction to Sociolinguistics, taught by Graham Scott and Dr SimĂłn Gonzalez. Students are exploring the social and linguistic factors which influence language use. With a particular focus on language development, students are gaining insight into navigating language attitudes and viability when working with ethnolinguistic communities in development activities.

Pictured are three of the four prescribed texts: Sustaining Language Use (Simons & Lewis, 2016), Understanding Language Choices (Grummit & Decker, 2017), An Introduction to Sociolinguistics (Holmes & Wilson 2017). Students are also reading The Language Warrior’s Manifesto (Treuer, 2020).
