Last night we hosted our annual Careers in Criminal Law Networking Night in collaboration with , and it was an incredible evening! 🩷❤️
A massive thank you to our five panellists for giving up their time and sharing such honest, insightful perspectives on life in the criminal justice field:

Gary Jubelin, a former detective, investigative journalist, and host of I Catch Killers, who spoke to the realities of major crime investigations and his ongoing passion for justice for victims

Ellyse Kwan, a criminal law solicitor and manager practising across everything from white collar crime to domestic violence matters and Supreme Court bail applications

Raymond Zhai, a Principal Solicitor and Managing Partner of Zhai & Associates, who brought a unique lens combining psychology, law, and years of experience in criminal practice

Matilda Slater-Phillips, a lawyer, Associate Lecturer at UTS, and PhD candidate whose work spans criminal law academia and frontline legal service including in Indigenous communities.

Briged Diaz-Collian, Senior Solicitor at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, with a career spanning Legal Aid NSW and Sydney Criminal Lawyers

The range of pathways represented in that room was genuinely inspiring. whether you’re eyeing the bar, a firm, legal aid, prosecution, or academia, there’s a way in 🙏
Thank you to everyone who came and made it such a great night. more events to come ✨

The UNSW Law Society, in collaboration with the UNSW Criminology Society, invites you to our Careers in Criminal Law Networking Night - an opportunity to hear directly from professionals working across the criminal justice system and gain insight into the diverse career pathways within the field.

Gary Jubelin
Gary was one of Australia’s most celebrated detectives. During his
34-year policing career he led some of the country’s biggest murder investigations including the suspicious disappearance of
3-year-old William Tyrrell when he left in controversial circumstances. Since leaving the police he has been employed as an investigative journalist, co-authored two top selling No. 1 True Crime Books and hosts top rating podcasts, ‘I Catch Killers’.
He is still passionate about justice for victims of crime, strongly supports restorative justice and is continuing to assist victims of crime

Ellyse Kwan
Ellyse exclusively practices across all areas of criminal law, including white collar crime, proceeds of crime, corporate crime, sexual assault, child sexual assault, drug supply and drug importation, domestic violence assault and Apprehended Domestic Violence Orders, Supreme Court bail applications, and all traffic matters- from drink driving to dangerous driving occasioning death or grievous bodily harm.

Raymond Zhai
Friendly, personable, and with an inherent drive and motivation to succeed, Ray is the Principal Solicitor and Managing Partner of Zhai and Associates. With a double-degree majoring in Psychology and Law, combined with his experience as a senior lawyer within a renowned criminal law practice in Sydney for over half a decade, Ray’s ability to connect with his clients, understand their circumstances, and present their version of events to the Courts with impact and candour make him a top criminal lawyer in Sydney.
