Kevin Hoffman Walk: An Aussie native garden walking trail, east side of Hovells Creek, Lara, Victoria
(1)

This tranquil trail, which is approximately 900 metres in length, stretches along the east side of Hovells Creek between Station Lake Road and Flinders Avenue in Lara. It was created by Lara resident Kevin Hoffman back in 1970 and over the following 40 plus years, he landscaped and beautified the area, creating a walk that is filled with numerous Australian native plants and indigenous vegetation. With supporters along the way, Kevin has created a walk that locals and many visitors far and wide have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy in the years to come.

What Has Caught Your Eye This Spring?

We are halfway through spring already! 🌿

Have you spotted any flowers at the Walk that you have not noticed before? Perhaps a new colour, an unusual shape or a small bloom you have walked past on previous visits?

Recent rain caused this gorgeous Mint Bush vision down one of the paths causing a carpet of purple petals. It just looked beautiful causing raking to be prohibited!

Take your time on your next wander — there is always something worth a closer look. We would love to hear what has caught your eye.

Our 2027 calendar celebrates the Magic of the Walk through photographs taken by the winners and featured photographers of our annual photo competition.

Calendars are $15 each, available at newsXpress Lara or through our online shop, with postage or local pickup. Every purchase supports the ongoing care of the Walk.

Enjoy your spring Walks!

Pops of Purple!

The purple flowers are making themselves noticed at the Walk this spring! 💜

There is mint bush, Tetratheca thymifolia (Fairy Bells — such a cute name), native hibiscus, Thomasia purpurea and Indigofera australis — just to name a few.

Take a wander and see which ones catch your eye.

These changing colours are part of the Magic of the Walk, the theme of our 2027 calendar. You can pick up a copy at newsXpress Lara or order through our online shop.

Do you enjoy weeding?

Our last weeding Working Bee was a great success, so we are keeping the momentum going. Many hands really do mean more weeds removed!

Come along and lend a hand this Sunday:

Sunday 4 October
8.30 am – 10.30 am
Meet at the green container, Walkers Road end

Stay for an hour, the full two hours or whatever time you can spare. Please bring gloves, a bucket, kneeling pads if you require them and your preferred gardening hand tool. We will have some hand tools available too.

Whether you love weeding or are a reluctant-but-helpful weeder, we would love to see you. Please send us a message or email to let us know you are coming.

If you cannot join us on Sunday, you can still support the ongoing care of the Walk with our 2027 calendar. It is available at newsXpress Lara or through our online shop.

Thanks for your support and enjoy your Walks!

Grand Final Day was always a little different for Kevin.

For someone who spent so much of his time working down along “the creek”, it was one of the few days he was known to put the tools down, particularly if Geelong was playing! Garden in the morning - watch the footy in the afternoon - and then go back outside and garden some more when it was all over!

With the AFL Grand Final today, perhaps Kevin would approve of us suggesting a little time outdoors before or after the game.

If you are out and about over the weekend, take a wander through the Kevin Hoffman Walk, enjoy what is flowering, listen for the birds and simply slow down for a while.

This weekend also falls close to two years since Kevin passed away on 28 September 2024, making it a lovely time to enjoy the place he created and remember the extraordinary legacy he left for our community.

Enjoy Grand Final weekend and enjoy your Walks! 🌿🏉

Bursts of Yellow!

What a beautiful time for an afternoon wander along the Walk.

There are so many lovely bursts of yellow in bloom at the moment, including:

Guinea Flower, Melaleuca, Grey Cottonhead, Eutaxia — also known as Egg and Bacon Plant, which is such a fun name — Acacia, Grevillea flexuosa and Banksia.

A cheerful little reminder to slow down and notice what is flowering right now.

Enjoy your sunny Walks!

Have you seen our new sign?

Have you spotted the new Kevin Hoffman Walk sign at the Station Lake Road end?

A big thank you to the City of Greater Geelong for updating this sign. It looks fresh, clear and welcoming, and it is a lovely improvement to this entrance of the Walk.

Next time you are passing by, take a look. It is looking great.

Enjoy your Walks!
