The Australian Maritime College (AMC) is a specialist institute of the University of Tasmania and one of the seven founding members of the International Association of Ma

ritime Universities (IAMU). In 2013, the University of Tasmania was ranked in the top 10 research universities in Australia and in the top 2% of universities worldwide* in the Academic Rankings of World Universities.* With a curriculum focused on developing multidisciplinary knowledge and skills, as well as global perspective and social responsibility, graduates are equipped and inspired to respond to opportunities and challenges in an ever changing world. AMC is Australia’s national institute for maritime education, training and research, and globally recognised as being a centre for excellence. Offering a hands-on approach to learning, career aligned programs, professionally experienced teaching and research staff and extremely strong industry links. AMC is located in Australia’s picturesque island state of Tasmania, on the Newnham campus of the university. The main teaching campus has a multi-million dollar suite of specialist teaching, learning and research facilities which are utilised by government bodies and maritime related businesses world-wide. AMC also has an emergency response centre, as well as an impressive fleet of training and research vessels located at Beauty Point, a 45-minute drive from its main campus. AMC’s specialist facilities are designed to enhance learning by providing a hands-on, practical study experience for students. Class sizes are capped, meaning students and teaching staff work closely together. Course delivery options offer flexibility, including opportunities for full-time, part-time and online or distance study; and a generous range of scholarship programs available. AMC offers a wide range of courses, within the following study areas:

• Maritime Business & International Logistics
• Ocean Seafaring
• Maritime Engineering & Hydrodynamics
• Coastal Seafaring (VET)

Students can undertake programs at many levels including vocational certificates, diplomas, bachelor degrees; as well as postgraduate degrees, including doctorates

As Australia’s national maritime training provider, AMC delivers nationally recognised VET programs. All VET programs are delivered in accordance with the national Maritime Training Package and meet the Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s (AMSA) requirements for domestic and foreign going licences. In addition, AMC’s maritime engineering courses are accredited by Engineers Australia, the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA), the International Institute of Marine Engineer, Science and Technology (IMarEST), and recognised worldwide. AMC’s course offerings remain relevant to global demands and are informed by industry and government bodies which are some of the reasons why AMC’s graduate employment rate is high and our highly skilled graduates are in demand world-wide. Whether it’s captaining a vessel, designing advanced ocean engineering structures or keeping the world’s goods moving, AMC can get you there.

International Day for Women in Maritime!

Today we recognise and celebrate the important role women play across the maritime industry, from seafaring and engineering to leadership, research and operations. Their contribution strengthens the sector and supports innovation, resilience and growth.

While progress has been made, women remain underrepresented in many areas. This day is a reminder of the importance of creating inclusive environments, supporting career pathways, and ensuring equal opportunities at all levels.

By championing women in maritime and supporting the next generation, we can help build a more diverse and sustainable industry for the future. 🌊

The Australian Maritime College (AMC), University of Tasmania, is pleased to announce a new collaboration with the International Forwarders & Customs Brokers Association of Australia, strengthening connections between industry and higher education in global logistics and maritime business.

Through this collaboration, AMC will assess and recognise the Diploma of Customs Broking (DCB) and the Diploma of International Freight Forwarding (DIFF), along with relevant industry experience, for credit towards AMC’s Maritime and Logistics Management programs.

This initiative enables qualified professionals to build on their existing expertise and advance their careers through further academic study. Eligible IFCBAA members and graduates may be assessed for credit towards selected AMC/UTAS courses, helping to reduce duplication of learning and supporting more efficient progression to a degree qualification.

The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to:
• Supporting workforce development in Australia’s freight logistics sectors
• Recognising the value of vocational training and industry experience
• Providing flexible and accessible study options for working professionals
• Strengthening collaboration between academia and industry

By recognising and assessing IFCBAA’s industry-recognised qualifications within AMC’s globally respected maritime and logistics education, this collaboration expands opportunities for professionals to deepen their knowledge, develop leadership capability, and contribute to the evolving needs of global supply chains and trade. This work also contributes to strengthening Australia’s skilled workforce and enhancing the nation’s global competitiveness in maritime and logistics industries.

Fraser marked the foundation of the Australian Maritime College, recognising Australia’s strong connection to the sea and the need for specialist maritime education. More than four decades on, AMC continues to shape maritime professionals and drive innovation across the sector.
