Always so proud of past graduates of the LCS 🥰🌟
Amazing work Monty! ('22)
Junior doctor Monty moved from Tasmania to live and work in Cairns, after meeting inspiring rural doctors from Queensland. 🧑🏻⚕️
'I never thought that I would be able to be a doctor—I thought maybe I wasn't smart enough, brave enough or confident enough. But people along the way inspired me and helped me,' she said.
'While completing my internship (first year as a doctor) at Launceston General Hospital in 2023, I met some amazing rural doctors that I really looked up to—and many of them were from Queensland! ❤️
'After hearing their stories, experiences and journeys, I decided to get out of my comfort zone and learn from some of the best rural doctors Queensland has to offer.'
Monty said it was exactly the change she needed. She is now in her second year out of medical school—a junior house officer (JHO). 👩🏼⚕️
'I get to work in lots of different places (in the hospital) as a junior doctor so I can try them all out. My team changes every 10 weeks—but I have loved getting to know all the different wards and the teams working there and building their trust in me slowly, too.
'My favourite part of my job is getting to work with people and listen to their stories. I feel lucky that my patients put their trust in me so willingly. I carry their stories with me every day and I learn so much from them all.'
Monty is a proud Palawa (Tasmanian Aboriginal) woman.
'The health system can seem a little intimidating to some—particularly for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people,' she said.
'If you have a kind heart and want to help people—and you like science, a puzzle, a challenge—then you should give medicine a try.'
Thank you for sharing your inspiring story with us, Monty! ❤️
