In the School of International Studies at Macquarie University, engagement with global issues and public discourse extends well beyond the classroom.

We are pleased to share this piece on language, identity, and belonging, written by our School manager, Sheyana La Booy, which reflects on the role of linguistic diversity in shaping communities, with reference to Sri Lanka.

Macquarie University has achieved its strongest-ever performance in the QS World University Rankings by Subject.

For the first time, a Macquarie subject has broken into the world's top 20, with Philosophy achieving a landmark result. Three subjects now sit in the top 50 globally, up from one in 2025, and 12 are now in the top 100, up from seven last year.

With a record number of subjects now recognised, Macquarie is cementing its place as one of Australia's fastest-rising universities on the world stage.

Macquarie University has continued its rapid rise in global rankings, placing ninth in Australia and 166th internationally in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

Over the past decade, Macquarie has climbed 144 places. This year marks the University’s highest placement among Australian universities.

“Climbing so significantly in one of the world’s most respected university rankings is a testament to our strategic focus and the dedication of our community,” Vice-Chancellor Professor S Bruce Dowton said.

“We are proud to see our impact recognised on the global stage. Our rapid rise in the rankings shows what’s possible when a university remains focused on quality, innovation and purpose. It’s a powerful reflection of our people and our partnerships."

We’re delighted to share highlights from the inaugural MQ Curriculum Design Institute (CDI), featuring reflections from staff across the University, including our lecturer Jasna Novak Milic, who joined colleagues in this five-day program.

Organised by MQ Academy, the CDI empowers our unit convenors to reimagine their units, making them more inspiring, student-centred, and future-ready. It’s one of the ways we continue to enhance the student experience and lead in educational innovation.

The next CDI session is coming up in December, and we’re excited to see more of our staff take part!
