“Every music therapy session that reduces agitation, prevents a fall or supports someone with dementia to stay calm and engaged at home, is a potential ambulance call-out that doesn’t happen, an emergency presentation that is avoided. When we underprice allied health in aged care, we pay for it elsewhere in the system — and older Australians pay for it with their wellbeing.”
Monica Zidar RMT, President, Australian Music Therapy Association
Last week, the new Aged Care pricing advice to government was released, proposing music therapy rates significantly lower than those of comparable allied health professions.
If implemented, this could seriously impact the sustainability of music therapy services and reduce access for thousands of older Australians who benefit from music therapy to support communication, emotional wellbeing, cognition, social connection, and quality of life.
Music therapy is an evidence-based allied health profession delivered by university-trained and registered clinicians. Older Australians deserve access to high-quality therapeutic supports that meet their complex needs.
Please take a moment to read the AMTA media release and support advocacy efforts to ensure music therapy remains accessible, valued, and appropriately recognised within aged care.
Together, we can help protect access to music therapy for older Australians and ensure their voices are heard. 🎵❤️
