Today we commemorate the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

“Today the Virgin is born,
tended and formed
and prepared for her role as Mother of God,
who is the universal King of the ages.
… Therefore, let all creation sing and dance
and unite to make worthy contribution
to the celebration of this day.
… Let everything, mundane things
and those above, join in festive celebration.
Today this created world is raised
to the dignity of a holy place
for Him who made all things.
The creature is newly prepared
to be a divine dwelling place for the Creator.” (St Andrew of Crete (650-740))

Our Lady, pray for us!

Today marks the feast of St Teresa of Calcutta. Long admired for her extraordinary charity and for her unwavering commitment to satiate Jesus’ thirst for love of souls.

On 10 September 1946, Mother Teresa, fondly known to many by that name, received what she later described as a ‘call within a call’ from Jesus. She was filled with an overwhelming love for him and for souls, so much so that satiating his thirst for love and for souls became the driving force of her life. Through interlocutions and visions, Jesus revealed his desire that she bring him to the poor. He asked her to ‘Come be my light’ so that the poor may know him and his immense love for them. Her ‘yes’ to his invitation gave rise to the Missionaries of Charity, a religious community dedicated to the service of the poorest of the poor.

This year, the Australian Catholic Bishop’s Conference invites us to reflect on their August 2026 Social Justice Statement: “Living the Gospel in times of Social Division”.

Each year since 1940, the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference has issued a statement for reflection and discussion in the lead-up to Social Justice Sunday (August 30) on a key issue in society.

This year, Australia’s Catholic bishops have urged a renewed focus on ways to make Australia a more cohesive society.
