🚶♀️ Our students recently took their English learning beyond the classroom with a walking excursion through some of Melbourne’s most iconic locations, discovering the stories, culture and history hidden around the city. 🇦🇺✨
📮 One of the first stops was Postal Lane, which runs alongside Melbourne’s historic former General Post Office, now home to H&M. Students learnt about the building’s past as the centre of Melbourne’s postal service and even discovered the meaning behind the expression “going postal" which is a phrase used to describe someone becoming crazy!
🎨 The group then made their way to Young & Jackson, one of Melbourne’s best-known historic pubs, located opposite Flinders Street Station. Here, students were introduced to one of the city’s most famous paintings called Chloé. Painted by French artist Jules Joseph Lefebvre in 1875, Chloé has been displayed at Young & Jackson for more than a century and has become a Melbourne cultural icon recognised by generations of locals.
🌿 The excursion continued to the Shrine of Remembrance, where students explored one of Victoria’s most significant landmarks. Originally built to honour Victorians who served in the First World War, the Shrine now commemorates Australians who have served in wars and peacekeeping operations throughout the country’s history.
📚 From learning local expressions to discovering famous artworks and important historical landmarks, the excursion gave students another opportunity to practise English while experiencing the stories that have shaped Melbourne. 💬❤️
