ICEN 2026 is officially underway! ๐ŸŒฟ

What a wonderful way to begin three days of connection, learning and reflection here in Hobart, on International Emergency Nurses Day.

Yesterday, Conference Convenor Alexandra Sarre opened ICEN 2026, followed by a Welcome to Country from John Wright, before Her Excellency the Honourable Caroline Wells, Governor of Tasmania, formally declared the conference open.

Our theme this year, โ€œMeaningful Work, Meaningful Place,โ€ invites us to reflect on what makes emergency nursing so special, the people we work alongside, the communities we care for, the moments that stay with us and the reasons we continue to show up, even on the hardest days.

As Alexandra shared in her opening address, our hope is that over the coming days, delegates find time to reconnect with their purpose, learn from one another, celebrate the extraordinary work happening across emergency nursing and remember why we stay.

Because meaningful work isnโ€™t always found in the big moments. Sometimes itโ€™s in the smallest interactions, the relationships we build and the difference we make without even realising it.

Hereโ€™s to three days of meaningful conversations, new connections and a little Tasmanian magic!

Happy Emergency Nurses Day!

Today, we celebrate the dedication, expertise and compassion of emergency nurses across Australasia and beyond.

From critical decision-making and life-saving interventions to providing comfort during moments of uncertainty, emergency nurses make a difference every single day.

This year, Emergency Nurses Day is even more special as it coincides with the opening of the International Conference for Emergency Nursing (ICEN) 2026 in Hobart! What better way to celebrate our profession than by bringing emergency nurses together to share knowledge, exchange ideas and strengthen connections.

At The College of Emergency Nursing Australasia, we are proud to represent and support a profession defined by resilience, skill, leadership and an unwavering commitment to patient care.

To every emergency nurse, thank you for everything you do.

College of Emergency Nursing Australasia NSW Branch President Dr Belinda Munroe spoke yesterday at the launch of Parliamentary Friends of Emergency Medicine and Care at Parliament House, alongside Australasian College for Emergency Medicine and the group's parliamentary co-chairs Dr. Gordon Reid MP and Dr Monique Ryan MP.

The breakfast marked the launch of ACEM's State of Emergency 2026 report, which looks at what an ageing population means for emergency care. In 2023-24, more than 53,000 older people spent over 24 hours in an emergency department before being admitted to an inpatient bed.

Belinda, an emergency nurse of more than 20 years who still practises clinically, spoke about what that looks like from the bedside: hours in a noisy, unfamiliar environment for the patient, and for their nurse, managing acute illness alongside frailty, cognitive impairment and complex medications, all while ambulances keep arriving and other patients become critically unwell.

She set out three priorities:

- Retain and develop the emergency nursing workforce, with staffing that reflects patient acuity and complexity, protected education time and sustainable careers, including in rural and regional communities

- Make emergency departments safer for patients and staff, with trained security, environments designed for safe care and support after an incident

- Include emergency nurses in the decisions that shape emergency care, from service design to workforce planning and reform

CENA's recent member and community survey found that, among those answering the question, 58 per cent had seriously considered leaving emergency nursing or emergency care in the past year.

Thank you to Australasian College for Emergency Medicine and the co-chairs for convening the group. CENA welcomes it as a chance to work across parties and professions, and looks forward to parliamentarians hearing directly from emergency teams.

College of Emergency Nursing Australasia President Kelli Innes and Acting Executive Officer Claire Johnson met with Victorian Greens health spokesperson Sarah Mansfield MP last week, alongside colleagues from Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, to advance the emergency nursing and emergency care agenda ahead of the state election.

ED safety, occupational violence and the pressures on the emergency nursing workforce were central to the discussion.

CENA and ACEM have agreed two joint election asks:

1. Dedicated ED security officers in every Victorian emergency department, trained specifically to work in healthcare settings, employed as part of the ED clinical team and available 24/7

2. Re-establishment of the Victorian Violence in Healthcare Taskforce, reporting directly to the Minister for Health

The discussion also covered access block and ED overcrowding as key drivers of violence. A decade ago, fewer than 900 patients a year spent 24 hours or more in a Victorian ED. Last year it was more than 14,500, with people in mental health crisis the most overrepresented in those long stays.

CENA's Victorian election platform also calls for:

โ€ข An investment of $15 million over four years to retain and develop existing emergency nurses
โ€ข Funding for specialist training, wellbeing programs, clinical supervision, mentoring, career development and backfill
โ€ข A requirement for every health service with an ED to implement an emergency nursing retention plan
