For the past two weeks, final year Audiology students Lala and Michael have been on an interdisciplinary placement in Shiraoi, Japan. Alongside peers from Physiotherapy and Social Work, they’ve been collaborating with Hokkaido University to explore local health challenges.
This placement involved conducting ear health screenings and delivering educational presentations to senior residents. From Lala and Michael’s perspectives, the placement has been an opportunity to explore local health challenges whilst navigating cultural differences and language barriers. It has taught them that the best clinicians are those who collaborate, listen deeply, and embrace diverse perspectives.
Thank you to Hokkaido University and the community of Shiraoi for welcoming the students.
