What started as a friendship at RMIT has grown into 30 years of design, innovation and business success.

RMIT Industrial Design alumni Steve Martinuzzo, Jack Magree and Warwick Brown first met as students before going on to build Cobalt Design, now one of Australia’s leading product design consultancies.

Since launching in 1996, Cobalt Design has completed more than 1,200 projects, earned 75 awards and worked on products across healthcare, transport, science and everyday life, including the iconic KeepCup.

Through three decades of working together, their different perspectives, shared curiosity and friendship have remained at the heart of the business.

As Steve puts it, “good design is ultimately a team pursuit.”

Huge congratulations to RMIT alum Dr Alireza Heidarian, recognised as an Emerging Leader at Study Melbourne the Victorian International Education Awards 2026! 👏🎓

Since completing his PhD in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at RMIT in 2023, Alireza has been turning research into real-world impact across health, clean energy and innovation.

Now a Research Fellow at Monash University, Alireza is also emerging as a leader in research commercialisation. His work includes contributing to the development of a new inhaler for people with chronic respiratory conditions, being named as an inventor on a granted US patent and helping attract clean-energy investment to Victoria.

Beyond his research, Alireza is committed to giving back through advocacy, mentoring and fundraising. As he says, “Victoria invested in me as an international student, and I give back.”

Congratulations Alireza on this well-deserved recognition!

From renewable energy and climate resilience to circular economies, culture, creativity and community-led change, the program brings together ideas, conversations and experiences shaping what comes next.

RMIT has risen again in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings! 🎉

We’re now ranked 239th globally out of more than 2,200 universities, and 13th in Australia.

This year, RMIT recorded higher scores for teaching reputation and research reputation and improved across all four measures of research quality.

We also remain in the global top 100 for international outlook, ranking 81st in the world. This reflects the international mix of our staff and students and our international research collaboration.

Ten years ago, RMIT was in the 401–500 band globally and equal 24th in Australia. That progress places RMIT among the leading global improvers in the rankings over the past decade.

Thank you to the academic and professional staff across RMIT whose work is behind this result.
