RMIT Practice Research Symposium

RMIT Practice Research Symposium RMIT University's School of Architecture and Urban Design runs a PRS twice yearly each in Australia, In this they engage in a long weekend of discourse.

RMIT seeks out practitioners who have developed a body of work that demonstrates mastery of their field.RMIT seeks out practitioners who have developed a body of work that demonstrates mastery of their field. We invite them to reflect upon the nature of that mastery within a critical framework and to speculate through design on the nature of their future practice. Design Practice Research at RMIT

is a longstanding program of research into what venturous designers actually do when they design. Six times a year across the globe, these invited ‘masters’ come together to be part of a Practice Research Symposium (PRS). Each candidate’s presentation at the PRS paces their research and allows public consideration of the nature of the mastery that their peers have recognised in their work. The research embedded in their practice is interrogated within a group of their peers and challenged by critics that they respect. The PRS weekend also includes lectures, discussion panels, social events and the chance to observe research completion events and exhibitions. Practice Research Symposiums occur twice yearly each in Australia (MEL), Asia (HCMC) and Europe (Barcelona).

In the not-so-quiet-quiet time between PRS Australia June and PRS Asia September, we’d like to take a moment to look forward and to look back.

Looking forward, we’re welcoming Professor Daniel Palmer as our new PRS Australia Chair.

Daniel is a Professor in the School of Art at RMIT University and currently leads Art History and Theory.

Daniel’s research and professional practice focuses on contemporary art and cultural theory, with a particular emphasis on photography and digital media. Between 2018 and 2023 he was Associate Dean of Research and Innovation in the School of Art at RMIT. Prior to joining RMIT in 2018, Palmer was Associate Dean of Graduate Research and Associate Professor in the Art History & Theory Program at Monash Art, Design & Architecture.

In his tenure, Daniel will embrace a commitment to community and future practice:

“I’m honoured to continue the legacy of those who have shaped the long and distinguished history of PRS Australia. From my perspective in the School of Art, I’m eager to strengthen collaboration among creative practice researchers across schools, particularly around shared concerns such as generative AI, the climate emergency, and the responsibilities of working on unceded land. My thanks to Andrea for her magnificent stewardship.”

In the same breath, we look back at the valuable contributions from A/Prof Andrea Eckersley during her term as PRS Australia Chair.

“It has been so fantastic working closely with the PRS community over the last few years. It really has been an absolute privilege being witness to so much extraordinarily great and innovative work that is created and supported through this unique model of research training. What I love most about the PRS is the sharing of knowledge and insights and the generous support that each of you give to one another. Thank you!”

🤍 Thank you to Andrea and welcome to PRS Australia, Daniel!
