Sadly, we announce that we have lost another member of the Panther family.

After battling illness over a long period, Ian Hill passed away on 13 June. Ian was a foundation player with the Old Mentonians’ Football Club, playing in the Club’s first season in 1968. ‘Hilly’ was player number 12 on the list of all those who have represented the Club.

Although Ian had only a short career with Panthers, just six games in that inaugural year, his efforts in helping to establish the Club will always be appreciated and not forgotten.

Sadly we announce the passing of another member of the Panthers’ family.

Ray Austin passed away on 8 May at the age of 87.

Ray made a wonderful contribution to the Old Mentonians’ Football Club.

For many years he acted as timekeeper for the senior team, filling one of those thankless roles without which our games would not have taken place.

He was also a long-term member of the committee, including serving a stint of three years as Secretary. In 2002 he was elected as President of the OMFC, the fifteenth person to fill that role.

Ray made an invaluable contribution to our Club. His leadership, dedication and sage advice were of immense value to those with whom he served on the Club’s committee and his contribution to the Panther cause was outstanding.

From all at the OMFC, our deepest sympathy to Ray’s son Matthew (Panthers’ Life Member) and Jade Smith-Love-(Matthew’s stepdaughter and past player) and to all members of Ray’s family.

It is with great regret that we announce the recent passing of Jenny Ericksen and Sue Nottle.

Jenny was the wife of Old Mentonians’ Football Club stalwart and Life Member, Colin Ericksen. Sue was the wife of Bob Nottle, one of the founders of our Club and the Club’s first captain.

Both women provided wonderful support to their husbands, assisting greatly in them playing such important roles in the Panthers’ history.

Both will be greatly missed.

All involved with the OMFC extend their deepest sympathy to Colin and Bob and their respective families.

Although the Old Mentonians’ Football Club is currently in recess, the Club recently held its Annual General Meeting. At that meeting a committee was elected to manage the Club’s affairs over the next year.

The committee’s aim is to ensure that the Club remains alive and its history is not lost. It is hoped that, in the future, there will be a desire among those attending Mentone Grammar School to continue playing football after leaving the School and play under the banner of the OMFC. Our desire is that the Club will be there when that occurs and we will be able to facilitate the resurgence of the Panthers.

The club sends a big congratulations to Tom McCarthy on being selected in the AFL mid season draft. Tom started in 2018 as part of the clubs u19s and rose through the grades which saw him win the 2022 senior B&F. A fantastic talented footballer and an even better person we wish him all the success going forward

Sadly, our Club is mourning the loss of one of our great supporters, and a member of one of the Club’s great families.

Fred Macquire has passed away, aged 88.
Fred’s sons, Russell and Nick, both played for, and captained, the Club. Both were members of our premiership team in 1990. Fred’s grandson, Russell’s son Elliott, also represented the Club with great distinction.

Fred’s work as a bookmaker meant that his attendance at games was limited, however he was a committed supporter and generous sponsor.
After his retirement, Fred regularly attended games, wholeheartedly committed to the gold, black and blue cause.

Twice, Fred was awarded our trophy for the Club’s Most Valued Supporter – and honour which was richly deserved. No matter the Club’s fortunes on field, Fred’s enthusiasm for the Panthers never wavered.
Our deepest and most sincere condolences to Judy, Russell, Nick and Joanne and to all members of the extended Macquire family.

Fred was a quiet, unassuming man, however his passion for the Club and desire to see the Panthers succeed was never in doubt.

He will be greatly missed.
