Meet Haseeb Aslam, a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) student at IHM, who shares his inspiring placement experience with AusWise through the Safe Down Under project.

🌏 From working with diverse international student communities to promoting sexual health and mental wellbeing, Haseeb is gaining valuable real-world experience beyond the classroom.

Through this placement, he is developing essential skills in communication, community engagement, casework and resource coordination, while learning the importance of trust, empathy and collaboration in social work.

💬 His message to future social workers? Think outside the box, speak up, and discover social work in the world around you.

From Fiji to Australia, Vedika Roy’s nursing journey is a story of growth, resilience and taking the next step.

A Fiji-registered nurse with experience in paediatric and neonatal care, Vedika chose to continue building her career in Australia and pursue a Master of Nursing at IHM.

For her, the journey wasn’t about starting over. It was about bringing her experience, knowledge and passion for nursing into a new chapter.

Through her Master’s journey, Vedika has strengthened her understanding of Australian nursing practice and developed a deeper interest in nursing research and evidence-based practice.

Her message to internationally qualified nurses and students is simple: believe in yourself, take it one step at a time, and don’t compare your journey with anyone else’s.

For Thilaka Chandanee Geekiyanage, Nursing Educator at IHM, it starts with staying curious, asking questions and making the most of every opportunity to learn.

With a background spanning nursing education, mental health practice, research and clinical leadership, Thilaka brings real-world experience into the classroom. Her passion for mental health nursing, evidence-based practice and trauma-informed care shapes the way she connects nursing theory with clinical practice.

In this video, Thilaka shares the principles that guide her teaching and her advice for students navigating their nursing journey, from learning through clinical placements to building confidence, showing compassion and treating every person with dignity and respect.

A childhood hospital experience, a nursing career in Fiji, and a dream to start again in Australia; this is Sheetal’s story. 💙

From caring for her mum as a young girl to becoming an Emergency Department nurse, and now pursuing her Master of Nursing at IHM, every step has shaped the nurse she is today.

Her journey hasn’t been without challenges. Moving countries, balancing work and study, and pursuing registration in Australia came with plenty of “what-ifs”. But Sheetal chose to keep moving forward.

Today, she’s building on her nursing experience, preparing for the NCLEX, and working towards her goals as a nurse in Australia.

Her message to fellow international nurses says it all: sometimes, you just have to do it scared. ✨
