LINDA’S STORY – PART 3 | LOOKING BACK ON HER AIE JOURNEY ⭐

Every career journey starts somewhere.

For Linda, AIE was where she developed the practical skills, confidence and foundation that helped her move forward in her career.

When we asked if she would recommend AIE to others who are serious about learning and professional growth, her response was simple:

“100%. There is no question about it.”

Linda reflects on the training, equipment, facilities, trainers and support she experienced during her time at AIE—and why she continues to recommend AIE to others today.

It is always rewarding to see our former students return and share how far they have come.

Linda, thank you for coming back to AIE and sharing your journey with us. We are proud to have been part of your story.

A fantastic couple of days in Hobart as part of the AFI VIC/TAS Industry Tour 2026.

From experiencing the scale of operations at Nyrstar Hobart, to seeing world-class Australian engineering and shipbuilding at INCAT, the history and manufacturing behind Cascade Brewery, and finishing with the foundry and machining capabilities of APCO Engineering – it was a great opportunity to see the diversity and strength of Australian industry firsthand.

A highlight was also the 2026 AFI Tasmanian Legends evening, celebrating Peter McLinden and Andrew Perkins and their contribution to the industry.

Thank you to all the organisations that opened their doors to us, and to AFI VIC/TAS for bringing together such a great industry tour. A special mention to Amber Maxwell and Oliver Perkins for their contribution in making the tour such a memorable one.

Great conversations, new connections and plenty to build on from here.

“YOU ARE AT THE RIGHT PLACE.” | LINDA’S STORY – PART 2 💡

What would someone who has already walked the journey say to students who are just beginning theirs?

Linda’s message is simple: make the most of every opportunity.

Ask questions. Learn from your trainers. Practise your skills. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes—and most importantly, don’t give up.

Success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes patience, consistency, hard work and the willingness to keep learning.

Her advice to AIE students?

“You are at the right place. If you are serious about learning and growing your career, make the most of it.”

🛥️ Did You Know?

The smooth, glossy finish you see on many fibreglass boats isn't the final step—it's actually where the build begins.

In marine craft construction, gelcoat is applied inside the mould first, followed by layers of fibreglass and resin. Once cured and removed from the mould, these layers create a lightweight, strong, and durable boat hull that's built to perform on the water.

At the Australian Institute of Engineering (AIE), our students gain hands-on experience with industry-standard materials and techniques, developing practical skills that prepare them for careers in the marine industry.
