Do you have children aged 4-8 years old, and live in Beaconsfield, Victoria, Australia, Pakenham, Victoria, Elwood, Victoria, Australia or South Melbourne, Victoria?

RMIT University researchers would love to hear from you!

We want to talk to groups of parents and children about what it is like to live in your neighbourhood and how it might impact young children’s wellbeing.

What’s involved?
One-hour face-to-face group discussion and activity
Light refreshments provided.
$50 voucher per family on completion.
Group discussions will be held at a venue in your local area, and begin end of October through November 2023

We kicked off the new academic year with a welcome event for Sustainability and Urban Planning students!

The event was an opportunity for new, continuing and graduating students to make connections and for us to recognise the achievements of our students.

Congratulations to all the students recognised for their academic excellence in all programs and special mention to our prize winners! Liam G**k from the Bachelor of Environment and Society was the recipient of the Environmental Thinker and Achiever Award, Hannah Rutherford won the Robert Ritchie Prize for an outstanding Bachelor of Environment and Society student project in 2022. Jean Zhang received the David Turnbull Memorial Prize for an outstanding student in the Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning! And Sutton was awarded the Urban Prize for academic excellence in Master of Urban Planning and Environment.

"We can’t keep putting apartment residents’ waste in the too hard basket"

Although apartment buildings present extra challenges to recycling, Bhavna Middha and Ralph Horne explain it’s possible to design circular economy systems for apartments that match or even exceed waste recycling for detached suburban houses.

Apartments have lower waste recycling rates than houses, which means the growing numbers of apartment dwellers could add to Australia’s waste management crisis. But there are solutions to the problem.

The Centre for Urban Research is approaching its 10th birthday! We celebrated last week with a symposium – and a little party of course.

It was fantastic to hear reflections on the Centre's early days as well as considerations of the direction of urban research that seeks to create more equitable and sustainable cities.
