What does award-winning AI innovation look like in practice?

Professor Wei Xiang has been honoured with first place in the Sustainability category at the 'The Australian Financial Review AI Awards' for developing an AI-powered irrigation platform that enables more precise, data-driven water management in agriculture. 👏

Developed in partnership with ag-tech company Aglantis, the solution replaces traditional, one-size-fits-all watering routines with smarter irrigation decisions tailored to each crop.

“The future of agriculture will be increasingly data-driven. By integrating sensors, AI and real-time environmental monitoring, we can support more resilient farming systems for Australia and worldwide," says Prof Xiang, who is the Director and Chief Scientist of the Australian Centre for AI in Medical Innovation and the Founding Director and Cisco Research Chair at the CISCO-La Trobe Centre for AI and Internet of Things.

He is also Co-Director (Research) of the newly established La Trobe AI Institute, which is a single front door to the University’s AI capability across research, education and industry collaboration.

The 2025 Technology Infusion Grand Challenge – Awards Presentation, held in Delhi on 19 May 2026, brought together talented UG students from STEM and Business disciplines across the Asia region to showcase bold, purpose-driven ideas.✨

Organised by La Trobe University, the initiative is powered by the Centre for Technology Infusion, La Trobe Innovation & Entrepreneurship Program, School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences and La Trobe Business School.

A special highlight of the evening was the keynote address by Dr. Ruth Gamble, Director – La Trobe Asia, who spoke about the importance of bringing the human element into technology and research.

“It was more than recognition. It was a turning point that unlocked possibility, purpose and a belief in my own potential." ⭐️

Originally from Kerala, India, Gopika was awarded the inaugural Shah Rukh Khan La Trobe University PhD Scholarship in 2020, established to support Indian women pursuing globally significant research. After taking time away from academia to support her family, she worked as a scientific analyst in Bengaluru, India before returning to research through La Trobe University.

"At that stage of my life, I was not sure if I would ever return to research. The scholarship gave me the opportunity to rebuild that path.”

The significance of Gopika’s research at La Trobe - which focuses on honeybee health, environmental DNA (eDNA) and biosecurity surveillance systems - became especially clear following the detection of the Varroa mite in Australia in 2022.

“That moment made me realise how important early detection and strong surveillance systems really are. It turned my research from something interesting into something urgently needed.”

Re-energised in her passion as a scientist, she credits her supervisors Professor Travis Beddoe and Professor Gemma Zerna for supporting her development.

“Coming from government colleges in Kerala, working hands-on with advanced molecular diagnostic systems in AgriBio once felt completely out of reach.
For the first time, I had access to supervisors who encouraged my ideas and a research environment that gave me the confidence to contribute meaningfully to global science."

Six years on, Gopika still holds close to heart the moment that reshaped her academic journey.🩷

“Meeting Shah Rukh Khan and seeing the way he treated my family with such warmth and respect made the experience even more meaningful."

Looking ahead, Gopika hopes to build a career in molecular diagnostics, biosecurity and genomics-based surveillance systems, developing practical surveillance tools that help industries detect threats earlier and respond before outbreaks escalate.
