🎬From the classroom to the red carpet.

Media and Communications students Rayan Rashid and Noah Lawson recently had the chance to put their skills into practice, stepping behind the scenes at a special event hosted by La Trobe University in partnership with the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM).

The event honoured acclaimed Indian actor Rani Mukerji with an Honorary Doctorate for her outstanding contribution to Indian cinema and her longstanding commitment to support women, children and disadvantaged communities.

Armed with cameras and questions, Noah and Rayan helped capture social media content on the ground and interviewed some of the people at the heart of the celebrations — including Rani Mukerji herself and La Trobe Chancellor and former Victorian Premier the Hon John Brumby AO.

Rayan also joined the media contingent at the IFFM press conference, where she landed an interview with emerging Indian actor Simran Mangeshkar.

It was a chance to experience the pace of live event coverage, build their interviewing skills and see first-hand what working in media and communications can look like.

Celebrating the power of storytelling to create change.🎬

La Trobe University was proud to present the Equality in Cinema Award at the 2026 NAB Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) Awards Night, recognising Sitaare Zameen Par for its powerful portrayal of disability, inclusion and human potential.

The film also received a Special Mention for Simran Mangeshkar, whose performance helped bring its message of representation and inclusion to the screen.

As Dr Stacey Farraway, La Trobe’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Future Growth, shared:
“The film demonstrates how powerful storytelling can shift attitudes and open important conversations about inclusion and belonging.”

Through our longstanding partnership with IFFM, we’re proud to celebrate stories that challenge perceptions, foster understanding and bring diverse voices and experiences to the forefront. ❤️

Inspiring women and girls from around the world through the power of cinema 🌟

Today we awarded acclaimed Indian actor and humanitarian Rani Mukerji with an Honorary Doctor of Letters (honoris causa) in recognition of her outstanding contribution to Indian cinema, humanitarian work and social advocacy.

One of the most respected and influential figures in Indian cinema, Rani has enjoyed an illustrious career spanning nearly three decades, earning widespread critical acclaim and major honours including a National Film Award and multiple Filmfare Awards.

"Looking back at my career, I feel incredibly grateful that I have had the opportunity to portray women who are strong yet vulnerable, flawed yet inspiring, determined and unapologetically themselves. These were never just characters to me — they represented countless real women whose voices deserved to be seen, heard and celebrated. If my work has, in any way, helped people view women with greater empathy, respect and equality, then I feel I have truly fulfilled my purpose as an artist."

Alongside her achievements in film, Rani has maintained a longstanding commitment to humanitarian initiatives supporting women, children and disadvantaged communities across India. This includes the establishment and ongoing support of specialised intensive care services for critically ill children and newborns at the Holy Family Hospital in Mumbai, alongside other initiatives focused on education, food security and community development.
